It's much bigger, lots of vocabulary differences and even some gramatical ones (vosotros is a good example). European Spanish and American Spanish are the two big groups, but there are also lots of differences between the Spanish of the different latin american countries
It's still the same language but there are times when I'm watching a mexican movie and feel like I need subtitles.
Main difference is the usage of the vosotros pronoun (informal plural you) + all of the verb conjugations that the rest of Latam don't use.
It's mostly the same besides that and some "th" pronunciation for c and z that again, only Spaniards do.
From there you break down into lingo, slang, and all that shit that is garbage in every version of the language.

When I played Pokemon Ruby back in like 2005 on emulator, I had a hard time understanding what the fuck a "placaje" was. Or "güay" or "mola" etc. It was pumped full of Spanish slang that I just began playing the games in English.

I can understand Spanish from Spain perfectly, but I believe Spaniards have a hard time with LATAM Spanish. That being said, every LATAM country and Spain have their own dialect and unique words, so sometimes it's hard to understand slang filled Spanish from each country. Same with Spain, but the neutral varieties used in movies should be no problem on either side of the Atlantic
