Why would it be? The only part of Eastern Germany any of us go to is Berlin, which is a world class city.
I knew Eastern Germany was less developed, but I thought slightly less developed. Even Saxony-Anhalt has a really high HDI.

Yes I am aware of that, but the Berlin wall fell 30 years ago and I figured that the quality of life gap between West and East Germany has shrunk considerably since then.
Kind of like how Poland and Czech Republic aren't shitholes anymore

It was less developed and after the reunification lots of companies they had were ruined by the Treuhand.
They were sold to private owners for cheap and many of those people just destroyed them for a quick profit.

Currently not really, all the young folks tend to leave for the west for better paying jobs.

In reality the Companies there had very outdaded production methods, mashines and were therefore not very productive or far behind what is needed to make them turn any profit.
They ate up billions and would have aten up more if not multiple times more if not just closing them.
Of course the outdated shit is also a massive hazard for the workforce and the enviroment that also doesn't compile to German laws.
Another uncounted Billions needed here.
Socialism is simply not the system for a productiv and developed market.
