Why the fuck should I be liable for someone if they jump infront of my car? If they are just standing in the middle of the road and I hit them, that’s one thing. It's called 'Haftpflichtversicherung' and costs like 50 bucks a year. However I am insured against damages of up to 14 million €. Imagine you drive into some pedestrian with your car and the guy sits in the wheelchair for the rest of his life. Legally, you have to pay him some rent, dependent on the severity, f. e. if he can't work in his former job anymore. Without that insurance you're fucked in this case. I admit that this system isnt perfect, but 50 € a year is an ok amount imo.

I just looked, apparently I have it. If you own a vehicle you’re required to have car insurance, and I looked at my insurance card and I can see it’s tied in with that.

Those count as a motorised vehicle here, and since you can't make them legal for the road (number plate, vehicle safety check) they are just entirely illegal to ride on the roads. It's stupid, and I read recently that the law will soon be changed to accomodate electric scooters and bicycles.

On a personal note I fucking hate cyclists. Hopefully he never rides a bike on the roads again, hopefully sometime in the future cyclists will have to pay insurance like everyone else on the road.
