Seem to be to the levant what Catalans are to Spain. Ethno-cultural group that makes the occasional pushes for independence, and as a consequence aren't liked very much by the other powers of the region, who occasionally try to expunge them. Their hypothetical state would absorb a lot of eastern Turkey and almost certainly be at odds with the Turkish rump since they got a lot of historical baggage to work out the bloody way. Given the Turk's recent military performance, they might well win.

They're supposably secular moderates but your milage probably varies a lot on that score since this is the middle east and a lot of 'em seem to be redder than a baboon's arse. However they make a useful tool for the Western powers to avoid having to put boots on the ground in-region, receiving funding, arms and support so long as they keep their guns pointed at people we don't like. They're basically the Western proxy in the region's eternal pissing contests, just as Hezbolla is with Iran and the salafi groups are with the Saudis.

I don't hate Turkey, though can't say I'm a fan of their more recent course. I'm pointing out that even a country with an overwhelming advantage of arms and industry can struggle to deal with dug-in adversaries, and especially where the terrain favours them. The hypothetical Kurdish state would eat a lot of eastern Anatolia, including some mountainous regions where they would enjoy the home-field advantage. That makes things trickky, since most of the Turkish airfields and military bases are concentrated in the west of the country.

The principal minority of Kurdistan is Syriac/Aramaic-speaking Christians, many of whom are bilingual in Kurdish, especially a century ago, before the establishment of Arab states and the WWI atrocities that brought many of them who were distant from Arabs into Arab locations. The Christians traditionally followed the Church of the East, which maintained Syriac/Aramaic as an official sacred language far and wide, which prevented those who actually spoke it from adopting a Kurdish identity and prevented the language from being absorbed by Kurdish in the modern era. Copts are traditionally from the Miaphysite church which had no single official language, which is why they both speak and officially communicate in Arabic today. Although they too do not have an Arab identity, which arguably keeps Coptic from disappearing completely. It remains as an official but non-spoken language.

The people I just spoke of are Assyrians, in some ways. Independence for them would seem to be more urgent as they're in danger of extinction while Kurds aren't as much in such danger. They were the last self-ruling Christians in the Muslim world until the middle of the 19th century. Since then it's been downhill.

Artillery support was handled by an MEF battallion, anti-tank duty by drones, ATGM by U.S. special forces, and so on. After all, ISIS basically ceased to have any tanks in the east and north a few months into the American-led air campaign, so why would they need ATGMs other than to kill Turks?
