crime is very low in Rome. Maybe in some places you have to be more careful but its rare to have problems there and in Italy in general.

I think his point is that knives are more prevalent overseas than in the US due to the prevalence of guns, and that he'd much rather be stabbed than shot. Frankly, it's not a completely nutty statement. A decently sized knife can leave some serious wounds compared to a handgun, especially the cheap calibers that are popular among gangbangers (.22lr, .25 and .380 ACP, etc). You could argue that a knife up close is more lethal than a gun.
