Around the times of the French revoluton, france had around 25 million people while Spain and England had around 7 million each (so 3-4 times less). Also, France had a bigger population than all German states (not counting the non-Germans in Austria) combined
But then in the 19th century France stagnated and by the begining of the 20th century Germany had a 50% larger population while England cought up and Spain came to around 2/3 of the French population

They lost a LOT of men during WW1/2.

France had higher pop than Russian Empire
Data differs slightly by source but everywhere Russia is smaller than France

Yeah but I'm talking about the time when France lost the huge population advantage it had over other big Western Euro countries (Spain, Britain, Germany). And that happened in the 19th century when their birthrates went down like crazy, so before WWs. Also they didn't lose many people in WW2.
France was probably the first country where peasants stopped having children like crazy
