if you're single, don't live in an apartment, and don't really do much then it's probably 35k in a rural area

I'd say this is pretty much correct, like you say, if you don't do anything like go out to eat all the time and the House is paid off. 35k is very close.

I just did an exhaustive spreadsheet of yearly expenses. made some expenses higher than they might realistically be just in case. I got almost exactly $35k (if renting). If I outright owned a property then it could be as little as 13k a year.

That is all before taxes though.

So I guess 35k is the magic number then. Assuming that I lived until 95 (which is probably not gonna happen lmao), that means I would need approximately $2.5 million to retire right now. I'd better get to work.

I have old relatives that do. It has worked for them plus you can get a property tax credit in many states with is great for lowering expenses.
