when napoleon invaded spain, his brother, Jose I actually was a good king and tried to modernise the country, but the problem was that all the conservatives hated this shit and associated the liberal reforms and their supporters as french. so when napoleon got kicked out, the entire country was filled with Catholic Taliban with a small number of liberal reformists left in the cities.
the new constitution was written by the army, which was liberal, and they forced Ferdinand to accept the constitution before coming back.
When he came back he went back on it and returned to absolutism.
It was around this time that the wars for independence were going on and one of the armies that was ordered to go to america to fight the rebels, turned around and started a military coup and kicked the king out.
This started 3 years of liberal democracy, which was really shaky because noone could agree on anything. The french invaded again and later the absolutist ferdinand came back and reinstated the inquisition and other fun things.
When he died, he made his daughter Isabella II the heir rather than Carlos, which started the Carlists wars, which essentially plunged spain back into the middle ages for the entirety of the 19th century.
This entire episode was what started the hatred between the Liberals and Conservatives in Spain. Each war just got worse and worse until the Spanish Civil War erupted and Franco let his allies burn the entire country to the ground. This is why spain (and in some respects, portugal) was such a backwards shithole for most of its modern history.

I pray every day that when the current Spanish King dies, another Carlist War starts up. It's my dream.

Portugal seemed based though, the people were very traditional-minded there. Not so sure about Spain since I have only briefly visited Sevilla, Madrid and Galicia (day trips).
