I think he's right if you're an Anglo or some other where you don't have grammatical cases. I only bothered with grammar because it's relatively easy to convert Lithuanian cases to Russian. I'd have no idea how to explain what each case does to an English-speaking person. No wonder he won't bother.
I'm French and Russian cases are perfectly fine for me. It takes the same amount of effort and memory to remember a single preposition.
