The camp of losing candidate Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is scrambling to turn the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET) decision in favor of his electoral protest against Vice President Leni Robredo.
According to a reliable source from the Supreme Court(SC), the Marcos camp has been contacting associate justices appointed by President Duterte and aggressively convincing them to keep his electoral protest going.
The SC, sitting as the PET, has already finished its manual recount of ballots in three pilot provinces -- Iloilo, Camarines Sur and Negros Oriental -- that Marcos identified in his electoral protest.
Associate Justice Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa, the member-in-charge, submitted a report on the recount, but SC spokesperson Brian Hosaka said the tribunal "has not acted upon" it.
While the SC ordered both camps to refrain from making any public statements to the media, the Marcos camp is quietly tapping its allies in the SC to decide in his favor as per the SC insider.
Currently, President Duterte has eight appointees to the High Court -- Associate Justices Henri Jean-Paul Inting, Andres Reyes Jr., Alexander Gesmundo, Jose Reyes Jr., Ramon Paul Hernando, Rosmari Carandang, Rodil Zalameda and Amy Lazaro-Javier.
Duterte could add more allies to the Supreme Court with the retirement of Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin and Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio in October and Francis Jardeleza in September of this year.
The Marcoses have been recipient of favorable decisions from the SC in this administration, including the ruling on the burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

Slow but steady
It has often been said that despite periodic diplomatic upheavals, Australia has been fortunate to have a sprawling multi-ethnic Asian neighbour to its north that has managed to remain largely unified.
But here’s a fresh take on Indonesian stability that puts the recently agreed bilateral trade agreement into an interesting new context: Indonesia now has the world’s most stable economic growth rate.
Its annual economic output growth around 5% has not been generating much excitement in recent years in a region where countries from India to the Philippines have been recording up to 7% and overtaking China.
But this research by the Australian National University’s Paul Burke and Padjadjaran University’s Martin Siyaranamual shows that same lacklustre 5% annual expansion also underpins the world’s most stable growth rate since the beginning of the century. Australia comes second, which means the new trade agreement will be between the world’s two most steadily growing economies.
The research was prepared for ANU’s annual Indonesia Update conference last week and also presented this week at the Lowy Institute. Vietnam, one of Australia’s newer fast-growing trading partners, comes third. India and China, which are ranked 26 and 69, are included in the chart to provide some context.
Burke made the powerful point that predictable, if unspectacular, growth has “helped Indonesia consolidate democracy”.

While Indonesia is sometimes regarded as a one-dimensional commodity-exporting economy (and in that a sense a competitor with Australia), Burke argues that the steady growth reflects a more complex situation. It is less trade-exposed than many peers, actually has a diverse economic base with manufacturing and services as well as commodities, has benefitted from political stability, and has an established record of macroeconomic crisis management and risk mitigation.
It is a moot point whether a bit more volatility (and hopefully higher growth) might be worth it when Indonesia is widely estimated to need annual economic growth above 5% to keep generating sufficient new jobs for its youthful population.
But at a conference which was this year principally focused on the quality of Indonesia’s democracy over the past two decades rather than its economic performance, Burke made the powerful point that predictable, if unspectacular, growth has “helped Indonesia consolidate democracy”.
The Indonesia-Australia Closer Economic Partnership Agreement – still waiting for ratification in both nation’s legislatures – is intended more to increase the current relatively low trade intensity between two close neighbours rather than change the pace of economic growth. But reinforcing Indonesia’s relatively steady economic trajectory (and indeed Australia’s own stability) can only be a positive for the eventual use of the agreement.

The Malaysian ambassador to Indonesia, Zainal Abidin Bakar, said his government had sent a diplomatic note, mistakenly perceived as a protest letter, to the Indonesian government.
“It is not a protest letter, but is of Malaysia’s intention to help in dealing with haze (to fight fire at forest and agricultural areas in Indonesia),” he said as quoted by The Star Online, adding that Malaysia was not pointing a finger at Indonesia over the current haze problem.
“If Malaysia said they could help us, then let’s work together to extinguish the fires,” Kiki said. “Because many owners of palm oil plantations [in Indonesia] are from Singapore and Malaysia. So there’s no need to worry that Indonesia will be perceived as a smog exporter. What’s important is tackling the problem.”
During this year’s fire season, the Indonesian environment ministry’s law enforcement department has sealed off fire-hit concessions held by 30 companies, some of them Singaporean and Malaysian companies. Four of the 30 companies have been charged in connection with the fires.
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) environmental expert Mohd Yusoff Ishak told the New Straits Times that Malaysia and Singapore should form a joint investigation team with Indonesia to crack down on those responsible for the forest fires, especially those in the concessions of big companies.
He added that Malaysia had to be prepared to prosecute its own companies because “we have a large number of Malaysian-run corporations in the affected areas.”
“This time around, it can’t just be small planters that are doing this,” he told the Malaysian newspaper. “I believe that part of this is due to big corporations allowing such incidents. That’s why we need to have a multi-pronged strategy, where we target big companies that allow their plantations to be burnt.”
