>'smell' is an verb/action meaning to take in a scent
i.e. 'Here, could you smell this for me? It's like pumpkin, right?'
>'scent' is a noun which is hard to explain
i.e. 'The scent of chocolate chip cookies'
>'smell' can also be used as a noun in place of 'scent'
i.e 'The smell of chocolate chip cookies'
>'Odor' is the same as 'scent', except it's generally used negatively
i.e. 'The odor coming from the bathroom'
Thanks
If I want to express "OP pic" in the thread, is it "this pic" or "that pic"?
'This' generally refers to something near to you, while 'that' refers to things further away.
Online, where objects are 'intangible' or not physical, 'this' refers to something that you are showing someone, while 'that' refers to something that someone is showing you.
In short, if I wanted to talk to OP about his picture, I would say,
"That picture is really cute."
If I wanted to show OP this picture, I could say
"I think this one is cute, too!"
I'm sorry if this is too long, it is hard to explain.
I really like teaching.
Also smell is anglo saxon in origin while Odor and Scent comes from Norman French (and from latin "odor" and "sentire" respecitvely). The latter two have more posh connotation whereas smell is more normal
based and cute yahi poster
oh no, I misused "this" sometimes
many thanks kind user!
The rules for 'this' and 'that' are not strict at all, and it's very situational, so do not worry at all.
