It wasn't segwit, it's that they wouldn't increase the blocksize and decided that hardforks could not happen under any circumstance.
Many people felt that there should be on chain scaling and off-chain solutions but forcing people off-chain was wrong. This was essentially proven by members of the core team now selling a "scaled" BTC as their own product a-la-liquid.

it complicates things a shit ton for at most 70% more tx/s. just trying to wrap your head around the concept of block weight is a nightmare. it increases bandwidth and hdd requirements by 300% even though tx increases by just 70%. it removes signatures from blocks that didn't upgrade to the new version.
instead of changing 1 line of code for 300% tx/s increase they changed 100000 lines of code for 70% tx/s increase at the cost of 300% hdd/bandwidth requirement and reduced simplicity.

So many people here are missing the real problem with SegWit. It's not just that it's a pile of literal shit, the real problem is the reason it exists in the first place. AXA bought Blockstream, and they have every incentive to either slow the progress of BTC and/or centralize it to their benefit as much as is possible. This is the real goal of SegWit. It's really, really bad.
