IMO it's basically because no large amount of people has ever stomached working 20-50+ years under the conditions we live in today. When people of the past worked they at the very least had the illusion of getting something in return for their efforts.

Real world: I run an offshore team of 24 people doing development under me, and only so because they can't figure complex things out on their own. I'm very much in touch with other countries doing what I do, but we are still the leaders. I do hope one day they can be more independent as far as work, but that is a joke right now. They have access to the same resources I do, but not the diligence, to my frustration. I wish they were that good. It would make my current job irrelevant so I could move onto better things.
