How do programmers make money by themselves? I've been a hardcore C programmer for 10 years and work for corporations in highly technical projects which are hard to find workers for. I hate working for someone and want to work for myself. I make over 100k in salary but I'd rather make half on my own. I once did a couple of freelance jobs for like 2k but it's hard to figure out how to consistently make money, even though my peers consider me some kind of god with my craft. Wtf. I know someone who's always pumped up on adderall doing deals reverse engineering/hacking and has made a gross revenue of 1 mil from his room. FUCK.
To be fair I'm in my mid-20s and still have some time to figure this out.
Wagecucking is the only truly reliable way of making a STABLE long term income. Some entrepreneurial types do manage to make money here and there, but of course what they don't tell you about are the dry months where they're barely getting by.
Brandon Green
You're probably an ok C programmer first off, but I bet that you have no social skills to speak of. So who wants to work with the average toxic neckbeard who's a dick. I sure as shit don't.
and you can only call yourself shit hot when you've read all of TAOCP and the fascicles.

You’ve been programming since your mid teens and you still have no clue what to do? You had the advantage over anyone your age if you aren’t lying, but you wasted it.
Nolan Gonzalez
team up with a Craig Wright type personality. A dickhead way over his head, who has sway only via his grandiosity and forcefulness.
He will get you the clients by overselling what you can do and managing them.
Ayden Smith
>c programmer for ten years
You must be one autistic little boy. It doesn’t get more aspie than C, maybe except FORTRAN and x86
Ayden Thomas
Wish I knew how to get by self employed coding C As it is I do NodeJS and run some shitty web app
Adam Rivera
haha nope, and nice reddit spacing, try again
sure I wasted some years
Jonathan Wright
become a contractor where you earn $1000 a day and then start taking on your own contractors to make an agency
Aaron Roberts
why? JS is god tier now
Luis Gray
Create you own projects, this is what I do and make bank from them. Get into machine learning, statistical analysis etc, use C for performance.
Xavier Peterson
>Reddit spacing
Fuck off new fag.
Ryder Davis
I do work on many personal projects, but they are mostly game engines (which I plan to use for selling some games). What sort of projects do you work on with machine learning and statistics?
Oliver Scott
>Anonymous (ID: 0dVmpjE6) 02/16/19(Sat)00:10:20 No.12764854▶ > > >Reddit spacing > Fuck off new fag. No, you are the normie!1
Isaac Martin
>intentionally making sure your post is correctly formatted to belong to a particular in-group while criticizing the out-group you're both normies
Colton Cook
Freelancing is just wagecucking withtout any of the benefits. You'd be retarded to do it unless you're paid significantly more, which is true for some contractors. You're still working for someone else at the end of the day.
The only way to escape this is to start your own company. But C isn't exactly really for the kind of software startups that are exciting these days - it's mostly an implementation details for something industrial or embedded. What you work on might give you ideas. You need at least one or two partners realistically, preferably in the field you'd be applying C to.
Henry Ramirez
>But C isn't exactly really for the kind of software startups that are exciting these days Basically a nice way of saying your startup does something real and isn't a shitty phone app.
Robert Reed
Unironically starting hacking smart contracts
Adrian Williams
Idk man. seems like it's the dumbest shit that ends up making money. marketing is more important that programming skill when it comes to making it on your own. I'll let you know when I figure it out. we missed the gold rush days of the easy one man SaaS projects. we missed the gold rush days of the early app store. the market is too saturated now.
Dominic Price
I have spent the last decade becoming less and less physically capable while browsing chans exclusively. I make no money and I am almost 30 years, I have no skills and my friends don't exist any more I only browse every single day. I have seen my porn habits become progressively worse and my mother looks like she is at the verge of tears every time she sees me. I have no interest in games any more.
My entire day is basiclly getting my mother to buy me cigarettes then I sit in front of my computer with 84 different tabs open making OC in paint, monitoring threads and "creating" different personas for myself online.
The last time I touched a girl was when I was 16 years old. You are the normie I fucking promise you.
Noah White
how have you not kys'd yet fag?
Anthony White
that was the most pathetic thing i've ever read, go outside get off you computer and stop letting 4 billion years of evolution down
Andrew Allen
move out, do it it for ya moma
Jackson Gutierrez
i work at a well-established "startup" in its later stages and basically everything is built on C and C++, it really depends
Isaiah Martinez
that being said, coming from C and C++ to any other language for the most part is super easy (I can use C#, Java, and Python etc. pretty much instantly if needed), so it's not really a matter of being limited to C but marketing an idea like the other guy said, which is a completely different skill to develop
Ryan Gomez
Holy hell. Go into the wilderness for a year. If you survive, you will have become a new man. If you don't well, at least you tried Anything is better than the existence you are currently living
I own a database of horse racing data, have created an API, and run optimized ML algos on the data that seems to be statistically significant and have made nothing but profit.
Also I am in the process of building a crypto trading bot utilizing ML. Just need database knowledge, streaming knowledge, highly available data (apache kafka, apache ignite), understanding markets and how you can apply machine learning.
John Bell
Lmao all this fucking work, when in a couple years my 25 BTC / 1000 ETH (not counting the rest of my portfolio + ICOs) will be worth tens of millions. You faggots are trying way too hard.
Kayden Perry
Take note. This is a shill trying to discredit image board users. And these guys: Are his fellow shills or morons.
Your holdings are pathetic, but not as pathetic as your disdain for a fellow user's honest labor. Everyone has to start accumulating capital from somewhere and not everybody has your time in the labor market. Don't be a dick to someone who is doing the right thing.
Benjamin Russell
First things, that is very bad attitude to have: >To be fair I'm in my mid-20s and still have some time to figure this out.
Also if you have so much work experience in hardcore c then just fucking start your own company, I guess you havent worked 10 years at only one employee doing the same thing So by that time you probably more less know the ins and outs, know the people so just go ahead and do that trust me there is great money to be made if you succeed. The other way of going about that, if that is such a very niche and it is hard to find employees for that then become instructor and offer yourself to big corps out there. Corps have the resources to just take people more or less skilled and then just teach them stuff they need to know. I know dude that made multi milion profit out of just offering corps learning programs for their employees. he also started that business in his 20s
Juan Young
I get what you're saying, and yes I'm working on my own company, will probably take a few years to really get it going. And that's a great idea about providing training services to companies.
Blake Myers
> Just need database knowledge, streaming knowledge, highly available data (apache kafka, apache ignite), understanding markets and how you can apply machine learning.
You didn't mention machine learning, can you really just basically copy/paste some variables in ML? Yes I know how stupid this sounds, just curious.
Brayden Reyes
ask your friend whose making a million a year since they must know how
Kevin Foster
Send me your email
Jack Morales
You need to understand the algorithms and how to optimize them (gradient descent, bagging, boosting).
If you use them as a blackbox then it's not going to be nearly as effective, which is why you may as well master the tools and some of the maths behind them.
It's basically only multivariate calculus, statistics, linear algebra, which you can pick up as you go.
Is this one of those fabled copy&paste things I have heard of? There is no way someone could be this much of a loser on the internet. Stop larping, you normie.
Jonathan Smith
There's your answer right there fagget. No one wants to work with you. Will probably an hero on xanax by 28 hopefully. We don't need trash like you in this world.
Also if you're so shit hot post a quick project that you've done. You do have side projects right user?
Jack Jackson
well said
Ian Martinez
have plenty of side projects that are beyond anything you will ever comprehend, hahaha try again, also nice reddit spacing
Huh, that's really weird. I have a bunch of successful web and mobile apps. Guess that's dat dere proof by existence that you really are a douche. Beside's at the end of the day you're a programmer, not a computer scientist, and one of those isn't like the other.
I would never declare like you did that I'm an expert in anything, much less C. You probably have no idea what's going on under the hood. Because if you did, it wouldn't matter what language you use, its only a tool. That's why there are no good and bad computer language's, just shitty programmers like yourselves who can't think their way out of a paper bag.
But who care's you're just background noise. You seem like one of the average kids on r/cscareerquestions...
literally never going to make it because you don't have Google on your resume.
> yikes
Kayden Parker
What was your favorite part of TAOCP? And have you read ONAG yet?
> implying these make you smarter
Ian Clark
the best part is I literally do have Google on my resume LOL
Isaiah James
Sure you do.
Jackson Kelly
I actually just was thinking about learning how to set up an AI to comb through horse races as there is so much data. Got any more info user?
>accuses others of r*ddit spacing >actually uses r*ddit spacing himself Just kill yourself dude
Kevin Moore
>assuming user is immediately larping just for saying he's got google on his resume >not being able to think big >assuming anything remotely impressive is a larp
Working at google isn't some out of world experience, user, come on. Even if he's 100% larping, you're still a bizness man, don't limit your way of thinking. Google isn't impossible, nothing is fucking impossible, user. Fuck limitations.
Adrian Bailey
honestly im a 21 year old who's been job hopping trying to find something that makes me interested, i tried the trades and i didn't really like it that much, I like CS and programming but I've seen how saturated the market is, I'm just going to go with CS and just do my best as I possibly can. I've gotta take a shot here at becoming a world class talent at something.. Idk, i need some advice
Jaxson Myers
same situation here but was told that cs is saturated only at the entry level (where it really isnt cs, more akin to grunt labor). We'll be fine as long as we put in the work
Gavin Reyes
thanks dude, my thoughts exactly, through hard work and dedication we will make it
Oliver Morales
Guys, wtf. Have a number of plans that can at minimum replace a good software engineers income and at best become million dollar businesses. Just can't keep all the plates spinning at once. It's really not as hard as you think it is.
Is the every Steve Wozniak needs a Steve Jobs meme true?
[email protected] if you really need a growth hacker/product person/visionary fag.
Parker Cruz
just join the dark side.
Nicholas Clark
Kinda yes. You need idea+tech. If you can do both, then you are lucky and you have a chance to make it on your own.
Jeremiah Reyes
YOU ARE C O R R E C T .
Making a website with an "about/contact/faq" section? Pffft! Doing something that can't easily be outsourced to India? Now we're talking...
Like always I'm the only cs guy on here that has read Knuth and Conway. Not that it makes me shit hot or anything but holy shit you fucking assholes really are in it for the money. Which is fine, but don't call yourselves computer scientists. Becauee your not.
Isaiah Nguyen
You don't HAVE to become anything dude. Thats why people are misersble today. Just learn what you want in your 20's while waging and by the time you hit 30 you're a consultant.
Angel Jenkins
only if you are monkey you would use python ecosystem you don't want to reinvent the wheel while getting nowhere, critical parts are already in C anyway Knowing how to use syntax does not matter if you are still reinventing the wheel because of lack of knowledge of ecosystem and best practices for given language
Sebastian Hall
I long for simpler times user. JS has improved a lot lately, but the whole dev process is so complicated.
Angel Wright
Please provide more details on this, how do I get started as a one person contractor, I actually have other devs looking to join me but not sure how I go about finding or how much to charge clients.
Should I charge daily, or on project basis? Should I also charge a retainer?
Nolan Hughes
> use C for performance
Doesn't really matter what you write in the actual C file as the compiler optimizes for you anyway.
Christian Ward
Gov worker here. You would have to register yourself as sole contactor and pay your tax. After that contact your lawyer to get the paperwork done. Pretty simple actually once you get the hang of it. Register youself as PSO before that!
Andrew Sanchez
Money is a spook, why do you need it after 10 years of C? Unless you want to tavel for 2 months each year, it's unlikely that you need more money. Just find a cool interesting job and live the /lit/ life
I already own a company and operate as a contractor (and all of the tax stuff that comes with it) already working with a client that's hired me as a sole contractor.
What I'm hoping to get advice on is how to go about finding/charging new clients from an agency perspective as a team.
I have good devs looking to join, it's easy for me to set my price because I know what my daily worth is, but how do I go about charging a client as an agency, because then my company will have extra shit to take care of, plus managing more people etc., responsibilities change and I'm concerned I'll under charge and leave money on the table.
Does anyone here run a software consultancy agency? Does it scale well?
David Hall
> mostly game engines wtf, user?! write games instead! > i built some fundaments > going to build houses on those in the future > why am i homeless?
Anthony Sanchez
holy shit you sound like one of those faggots that oversells themselves on the CV and phone and then can't answer technical questions at the 3rd or 4th question your CV is padding for our garbage cans, and nobody will work with you directly because you're a garbage human being that needs to be boxed up and proxied by actually likable professionals to sell the code
Gabriel Morgan
yep
Justin Murphy
Ok I know game engine's involve some really heavy math. What equations are you working with? I'm reading through a dissertation on using algebraic geometry to get the shading right in game's that are set outside. Have you read that one? Any tips?
Jack Ramirez
Literally this...
Michael Brooks
Matrix math, quaternions, all kinds of line and plane equations
