Half of it is already absorbed in current welfare. You don't get UBI on top of welfare. So you get 1k a month either cash (which everyone will chose) or some type of welfare assistance)
The rest will come a VAT tax, cut in military, sales tax receipts on people just spending that 1k back into the economy which will happen.

This would translate to about $1 trillion in the US, but yang is proposing a 10% VAT... it will probably need to be at least 15% to meet his $800b target unless there's some other reason why it would raise more in the us than in the uk.
then again, germany raised 219b euros/3.478gdp with a 19% VAT (2016). That's 6.29% of gdp compared to uks 4.8%, at a 1% lower rate. That would raise $1.22T in the US.

Yeah and that's gross. Businesses get their VAT back from the government. VAT simply is a re-ordering of your Sales Tax - it's just that the government gets paid first, and the money can be reclaimed later if the product with VAT applied is not for consumer end use.
For example if you come on holiday here, everything you purchase is with 20% VAT, but when you leave you can reclaim it all as a tourist. It's the same throughout Europe. They send the money back to your bank account via wire transfer.
We're not even going to get in how prolific VAT fraud is either.

Germans will have higher amount of gross VAT sales because they sell big ticket industrial items. The UK economy is services based and not much VAT can be applied. For example look at the trillions in derivatives we trade, no VAT on that.

It is and it isn't. When Germanany exports its goods abroad (outside the EEA) no VAT is payable, and it leaves VAT-free. Also a lot of big ticket items are for industrial use - which means the country where it paid the German VAT can reclaim it too. This is where cross border VAT fraud comes into play and it's a massive massive problem.

Of course. I'm not sure whether it will save money though. Most people don't make full use of the law and miss out on registering for welfare they could get. With a fixed ubi they would all get their share automatically.
You save money on gibs gov workers who would get less from welfare/ubi than being employed but i'm unsure whether the missed out handouts don't save more money currently. Plenty of dumb honest fucks also work when they would get even more sitting on welfare. Basically the current system is potentially more profitable cause it exploits people better.
There's however of course another argument over saved manhours not wasted in this burocrazy hell that could be invested better coupled with the fact of how longterm increasingly more will end up on welfare and thus increase the cost of running the current system.
