If you stick to tourist areas in the daytime, you should be fine. Go to a resort or take a cruise, where they keep you away from the street people.

The secret to Mexico is to speak Spanish, and go to the middle class areas in the south. Most of the north is where the street scum are, and the illegals from south america, who are more likely to rob you than the locals.

A large number of Mexicans cross the border to work tax free - if they work at home, they have to pay Mexican taxes.

I knew a woman who was dating a dude who crossed over the border every year, because he was getting a free ride through college. He'd go home on the vacations with money he'd make tax free, and never paid a cent for his education - he came from a fairly well off family, too.

Everyone complains about Mexicans, but I know more Mexicans that are here legally, most illegals come from South America.
