Psychology and Psychiatry

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist? The words are used interchangeably by people and I don't know what either profession actually does.

Is there a difference in their meaning in American English and British English?

psychiatrist can give drugs

A psycholog is a somewhat of a therapist. He can make you unwind, or solve personal problems you've been battling for years.
Meanwhile a psychiatrist is a doctor that prescribes you drugs meant to help your mental health cope with your everyday life. Usually they work together, and from my own experience you'd never get a visit to the psychiatrist without visiting the psycholog first.

Psychiatrists are doctors. Becoming a psychiatrist is far more difficult and competitive.

Technically, a psychologist is a medical doctor (Went through med school) who specializes in mental and emotional cases, while a psychiatrist is trained directly in Freudian and other treatment theories.

In practice there is very little difference

uh the opposite user.

psychiatrists are doctors, psychologists can be doctors too but it's not necessary. usually they just have a masters.

also freud is a hack and his stuff is not used seriously anymore. only for history classes. nowadays they use stuff like CBT and/or IPT.

>CBT
What?

Cognitive behavioral therapy user, not cock ball torture. Calm down.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy

Freud basically invented something called Psychoanalysis. For which there is no evidence that it actually works. You know, it's the stereotype where you lay on a sofa where a therapist talks about your mother or whatever. psychoanalysis is gibberish.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychoanalysis

Cognitive behavioural therapy doesnmt work either because it‘s built upon the willpower of the client. Which is hilariously sad. If they had enough energy and willpower to get out of their misery, they wouldnmt have gotten into it in the first place. Cbt just tries to coach you trough forcing yourself to do or not do stuff that goes against your imediate wants and needs. The issue is that you can‘t coach someone more energy or willpower. And they definitely can‘t just generate it out of thin air. It‘s hocus pocus at best.

That's not the only method of therapy. Also CBT actually has studies that show it's useful. Maybe it's not perfect and can't help everyone but there's proof it works. Sometimes you also need meds, sometimes you need different types of therapy.

sometimes you need a smarted therapist. My Psychiatrist prescribes my Psychologist, because the first charge 6x the other, cost twice as much for a third of the time.

Whether either is worth while only time will tell

Broscience vs snakeoil salesman.

Psychiatrists have an MD, Psychologists have masters.
You normally go to a psychiatrist for prescriptions, and to psychologist or psychotherapist for therapy.

Could you please elaborate on this idea that Freud was a hack?

Common knowledge at this point. They don't teach psychoanalysis in psychology courses anymore.

Besides the fact that we have abandoned everything of his except the "freudian slip"?

Psychiatrists can prescribe medications, diagnose, evaluate among other things

Psychiatrists primarily oversee the pharmacological aspect of psychiatric disorders and psychologists oversee the non-pharmacological which would include diagnosing, evaluating, creating care/support plans and utilizing therapies or working in junction with your psychiatrist to address the symptoms of your psychiatric condition.

Retards

Psychologist focuses on normal people and the mental problems we all have/slightly neurotic fellows.
Psychiatrists focus on crazy people.

Not true.
