Just try to casually engage in whatever it is you're doing at these places, such as working out at a gym/playing volley ball at a rec centre. Guys can be quite reluctant to approach a girl for fear of rejection, so try to look friendly, and not like you're so focused on what your doing that it would be rude to approach you.

You might try to join a casual team at a rec centre (a girl I know joined a casual volleyball team for this reason), or even join a group revolving around something that interests you, such as Kendo, if you have the time and funds for that.

It's a numbers game, and requires a hard skin to be able to handle rejection and put your foot down when you need to. Experience is the best way to get that hard skin.

You honestly can't tell unless you give the guy a chance and gauge if he is a creep. I'm not too much into anime or comics, but I still go to FanExpo with friends because it's a fun time and, as a shy guy, I don't do much else other than work.

Also, seeing your name again is bringing back that nostalgia, so I'm almost certainly going watch Deathnote for the 10th time.

I went to a con for the first time last month, because I'm shy and needed to get out of the apartment, and everybody I spoke to there was pretty cool, with the exception of maybe 2 dudes who I both read as being weird right away.
