Does the book ever state what caused the end of the world? It looks perpetually overcast in the movie so I was thinking asteroid or volcano. Nuclear war wouldn't destroy the entire world, just the cities and immediate areas around them. The radiation problems would subset after a few decades, Chernobyl, Hiroshima, Nagasaki have proven that. The movie has them fucking around in rural areas and all the trees are dying.

well in the movie everything seems covered in ash, also there are only 2 living animals, a dog and a bug, rest humans. I dont think its an important part of the story how it came to be, rather the way people change to the worst in such hard times. user do you carry the flame within you?
