Does the book ever state what caused the end of the world? It looks perpetually overcast in the movie so I was thinking asteroid or volcano. Nuclear war wouldn't destroy the entire world, just the cities and immediate areas around them. The radiation problems would subset after a few decades, Chernobyl, Hiroshima, Nagasaki have proven that. The movie has them fucking around in rural areas and all the trees are dying.

Depends on the severity of exposure. If you're under face melting mSv readings you're going to kick the bucket from something else in a post collapse world.
