There are trails all over the place once you get out of the Seattle Metro Area. Issaquah is GOAT in my opinion for a Goldilocks-tier mix of comfy woods, upper middle-class community, ease of nature access, and still retaining the few benefits of being near a major metro area without the spillover druggies and homeless people. If you really need to be North of Bellevue though you should definitely live up there. Don't condemn yourself to a commute up and down I-405. I'm not too familiar with that area in particular, but I guarantee just hopping on highway 202 for a bit from Redmond will put you near more trails and forestry roads and the like than you could even imagine. Whoever told you about Tacoma and S. Seattle was correct.
