Stop this clowning around at once. The stuff you can see shouldn't worry you, that is easily filtered. The stuff you can't see, that's the nasty stuff because it gets into your system far more readily causing much worse damage.
Decent advice
Very bad advice, you will die incredibly slowly and in an incredible, indescribable amount of pain, better to just off yourself after your final phone calls.

Same as all the literature says to do. Unless I can get somewhere I somehow know is out of the fallout range or with better protection in about 15mins I seal off doors and windows, get to the basement, construct a shelter in the center of the room with the water heater one side and waterbuckets as the other walls and ceiling (our basement is entirely below ground). Add in the bags of cement we have and anything else massive. In 7 hours, the radiation level with be 1/10th of what it was. In 2 days, 1/100th.
Fallout is dangerous, but its not un-survivable.
You might be to young to remember the 7/10 factor rule but thats one of the worst things to do. Depending on how long it takes you to get out and how thick its falling, it'll be your skin sloughing off, not those sheltering in place. Fallout has a pretty quick half life, and your car is not good protection.

I live near a major metropolitan city, and pretty close to another major metropolitan city, so if I'm not dead from the nuke, I am going to be stuck in traffic if I try to go anywhere. I've likely slept through the period of time I have to react and I've already been exposed to too much radiation to survive, so I guess I will just prepare to die.
