Sun N Fun 2018: Warbirds And More!

Hey Jow Forumsommandos - I thought I'd share some of my pictures from EAA Sun 'n Fun this week. It's a huge, weeklong airshow that attracts as many people as San Diego Comic Con, and there are tons of military and warbird displays there.

Sweet

First up, a walk through the permanent air museum there gave me a chance to look at a Convair XFY Pogo. Yes, it's supposed to sit that way - it was an early attempt at vertical takeoff, and it did actually work. They never went into production though - apparently they were kinda hard to land.

A couple of F-16s did some aerial maneuvers there.

This is (most of) one of the last Boeing 307s in existence. The 307 was an attempt to make an airliner version of the B-17, using the same wings, tail, and engines, but with a new fuselage. Only a few were ever built. This was Howard Hughes's personal 307, which was later sent to a scrapyard, where somebody bought the fuselage and made it into a houseboat. EAA eventually found it, bought it, and put it on display.

Here's the Convair Sea Dart - the world's only supersonic seaplane.

There were some military vehicles, too, like this restored Jeep.

I'm too honest to take it, but of course I was tempted.

These are the faux Japanese warplanes that were made out of T-6s for a movie back in the 70s. The Commemorative Air Force bought them after production wrapped and has been taking them to airshows ever since.

Nanchang CJ-6 trainers. These have pretty much become the nuggets of the warbird world - the cheapest thing you can get on the surplus market that's still pretty decent. There were a ton of them there.
