Total contract time, is total time period. Including ait time. Which is what the .5 for 3.5 years is.

When i said 1 year of training and 2 years of time, that was just a generic example, sorry.

How it all works is, you get the 3.5 year contract, you go to basic, go do ait, which takes half a year or so, then you go to first unit, and start working.

reposting this so people know not to shoot themselves in the foot because their parents suck with money
>join military
>get monies
>send monies home
>food and housing is covered for you, so no need for monies

this is legitimately one of the dumbest things people do.
there are very few times where a poor ass junior enlisted should EVER subsidize their family, especially ones who cannot and will not give back to that junior enlisted.
I'm not the best case example for this type of thing but sometimes you have to forge your own path and realize you don't owe your parents your fucking livelihood.
Compounding the issue is that it's always financially irresponsible families where this happens to begin with and it sets up the junior enlisted for failure when they're just shipping off their paycheck to leeches.
You don't make much when you first join and longterm you're fucking yourself by doing this. Don't do it! DO NOT DO IT! It is not your job in life to sell your soul so you can support your family thousands of miles away while still trying to set your own foundation and live your own life. This stuff never works out well.

Taking my asvab tomorrow. Stressing out. What's a good last minute thing to help? I've been studying but not as much as I should have (work two jobs).

should have got that asvab for dummys m8

Why not start training them for the real world by answering stupid questions with intentionally misleading information? Also, larping is funny to me because I'm bored civilian scum

anyone enlist after graduating college? gonna go 0311 next may

Did army for the e-4, trying to just beeline to warrant.

im going to infantry osut in one month what should I expect and what should I do to help prep besides the obvious PT

Attached: nothing.png (111x86, 321)

>infantry
why do you hate yourself?

is this accurate? i got a 35 on the ACT, should i even prep for the asvab?

Attached: asvabtoact.png (1210x500, 198K)

nah, shit is beyond easy
got a 97 on the asvab with a 26 on ACT, translated in to a 133 GT score, gt score doesn't really matter past 110

any advantage over like, a perfect score vs a few points off?

Where can I take an accurate ASVAB practice test with line scores?

any advantage to googling what the score does vs asking randos?
i mean assuming you actually care. i'll tell you don't worry about it, you should do fine on the asvab for any job you want.

nah as long as you're not retarded when you go in there you'll get any job you want with a 110. anything higher than that is just dick measuring imo
most enlisted jobs require less than 95

eh, I figured im an 18 year old bitch right now and infantry will make me man up enough for any future career

be able to do an 80 in each event before you even walk into the recruiting station.

Yes, study for it, every user on here gets 99s, but you might be that user who needs to actually study unlike these geniuses. Go to barnes and nobles and read the asvab for dummys book, all the pictures and questions are one for one with the book. Might as well make sure you score high enough to get every job you want, or else you could score average, be able to choose the majority, and wont be able to retake it to score higher for the better jobs, because recruiter sees that you scored high enough to join, why bother letting you retest 6 months later.

back of the asvab for dummys book. Look back 3 or 4 megs a dude posted a download for it.

>be you
>future interview
>"yes user you have here that you served 4 years as a...11B?"

true story

same shit happened to me as a 35P korean linguist trying to get a normal ass intel job.

>so user tell us how you researched intel, handled intel, and used proper procedures
>well i got intel(korean newspapers) daily, and had to translate them, by putting them on computer program per procedure.
>but have you ever conducted any analytic research type work?
>yes, i read the details of intel(newspaper) and sent it up to the proper people.
>so youve never actually used analytic techniques to go through intel, and organize it all?
>no
>sorry user no entry level gs5 intelligence analyst job for you

Literally the only jobs i can apply for are translator jobs. Wtf was the point of making this an intelligence position if we dont do any actual intelligence work? All of my work experience is translating documents. Thats it, no leadership skills, no it skills, just worked in an office and translated shit.

Holy shit user, fucking saved. This shit needs to be searchable on google. I just went through an interview last monday, and thats exactly what fucking happened. Hopefully i get the job, i made the final selection list and they contacted my references, its a gs7 job in DC, non DoD. Fuck i wish you posted this sooner, or if you did before, wish i read it. Cause in the beginning i was totally giving standard answers, but when they asked me if i had anything to add, I just went full fuck it mode, and started backtracking and giving full explanations. The interviewer told me, i knew my shit, and that I should have said all of that sooner when answering the questions. But we went over the whole interview again, and I did much better. I think they liked me enough to give me another chance. God i hope i didnt fuck it up too much, I mean they wouldnt call my references unless i was a serious candidate right?

That only measures your english and math scores. You still need to study for the individual shit like mechanical knowledge, science, etc, so you can get a high ST or whatever score you need. You can have a 99 qt on the asvab and still manage to fuck up your line scores and not qualify for shit. So go buy a copy of the for dummys book and study. Whats 20 dollars to secure your future? Theres a free download floating around one of the past 10 meg threads.

post it again desu

Can you bring a guitar with you on a navy boat/ aircraft carrier?

they already know you're a fag for being in navy, they don't care if you want to bring your acoustic guitar

mega.nz/#!XuhSWQgb!ycwEyBz1J-DZx_GOsAxmSQCduAImNuzTRswqfRb-x-w

Problem is this is the 2007 version i think, i skimmed through and it looked like the same shit when i took it in 2010. And the same stuff in my cousins 2015 version. So should be good to go. Its free, so why not?

why not list parents as dependents? you'll get help from the military

I don't think that is allowed.

>worked as a translator
>Surprised only translator jobs are open
Why is this a surprise to you?

are all Navy rates 5 year contracts?

I assumed 35P would be different than 09L...which is straight up translator job. I though i would be doing more intel related shit.

It is if they're old or crippled and shit.

Sorry only air guitars allowed

you just get to translate secret shit. Also i've never actually seen an 09L in the flesh. Pretty sure that MOS is slowly being phased out.

They wont let you, only spouse and children can be listed.

Just enlist, to get out of their hair, and you will no longer be burden on them from a financial standpoint.

They said that in 2010 as well. lol

Anyways, i expected it to be a bit more technically involved beyond using a computer program.

dfas.mil/militarymembers/SecondaryDependency/SDC.html

I've never done this mind you but it seems to be a thing.

The problem with this, is that it only gives you partial BAH, and doesnt guarantee you a house for your parents to live in. And you need to show proof your parents make less than your pay, which is 25k a year in the beginning. Housing is at the discretion of your commander. And i doubt theyll go along with this.

My shitty dogs were fighting yesterday and I broke them up and one of them bit the fuck out of my hand and gave me a nice puncture. Now it’s getting red and swollen. Gonna head to the doctor in the morning and see what they can do. I’m shipping in 11 days. If this fucks me over I’m going to be pissed. Fuck you Bo you asshole.

Anyone know if there are anymore option 40 infantry contracts for this month? Or has usarec filled their quota?

unless you’re in SOF you’re not gonna see any action so may as well pick a comfy job in peacetime.

just ask your local recruiter user, I don’t have access to that database

yes I’ve done BLC but that’s pretty much it. I honestly don’t know if I’ll get ALC anytime soon since my leadership is okay but they’re not amazing. if I make E-5, realistically how soon could I go warrant? Assuming I get ALC right after promoting, doubt I’ll get it anytime soon. already finished my bachelor’s a few months ago too, so I’m wondering if that’ll help at all.

Is there anyway to become an officer through college degree and still see combat?

If you become 18A maybe.

can you translate that into civie speak please

Special Forces Officer, I doubt most occifers are seeing combat as of right now unless you’re a highspeed cool guy.

So only SF recruits combat officers out of OCS?

What's this talk of ground combat roles in the Air Force

If I hate my life should I go for EOD.
It's about the only job that interests me besides CBRN (sounds a bit shitty actually) and cryptologic linguist.

French foreign legion?

Not at all dude, but if you’re trying to see combat as of /right now/ try to go to a highspeed SOF unit. You can be an 11A(infantry officer) and might not even see combat in the current peacetime military.

EOD is among the toughest schools both mentally and physically. Go for it if you want, but whatever you do don’t go CBRN. You’ll be at a motorpool never able to do your job or just managing some tear gas chamber.

So the Middle East is quiet? I thought we were still shooting people. I wont be out of college for 2 more years anyways so I'm not in a hurry

Shit, if I was an engineering student with near perfect grades who just got bored, would 89D school be particularly hard?
Otherwise I was only interested in cyptological linguist, and I hear that's way easier.

I don’t know maybe, I’ve only met like one EOD guy so far. Guy said it was one of the hardest things he’s ever done, you need a serious amount of attention to detail in that school. 35P is easier but DLI fucks a few people up, just really depends on what language you get.

ya im at an air base, what do you mean by how does it work? what do u wanna know? i mean if you mean my job im still new but a lot of it is changing out electrical parts or seldom troubleshooting and reading wires

Attached: 15131109870009427a97b03beb8e03400e439ab51f56ad383422158b55f0c306aadb82a18f728dadb3d6162a748c7da27b42 (1280x1202, 61K)

How much different is OCS from Basic Training? Will you be less prepared of a soldier if you go through OCS? Do the Marines have this problem?

not a marine but my guess is youll get as much of training shooting and being a soldier through normal boot camp but since as officer you'd be having to learn strategic thinking to be in charge of groups of marines, etc.

People keep talking about it being peace time military, did Afghanistan ended?

I'm graduating in two years with a niche materials science bachelor's and want to am thinking of doing a stint in the airforce or army to better my chances of getting into a defense job after at a national lab or defense contractor. My question is where do I go to find more information? I've talked to recuriters and my university afrotc and they have not the slightest clue where I would get put in relation to my education. Next semester I'll be doing some research related work for my professor who does army r&d but I don't know how in depth or what exposure I'll get to it. Any idea where to get help or advice? I was looking into AF 62ex series but that does not cover materials, gs-806 worked better but that's civilian.

>tfw in the military but not cut out for it
I hate being so incompetent and bad at my job

Attached: images.png (332x443, 15K)

what do you do

new divo on on a ship

do you atleast get to travel around and stuff

I've been a few places

is it generally fun being on the ship? thinking of going in as a plane technician of some sort

>Weird and waste of moneys imo.
I 100% agree, those civilians were assholes who thought they were guarding fort knox.
>Realistically no one gives much of a shit about duty
Must be nice, Duty in the Navy is a nightmare.

I was enlisted in the USAF from 2001-2007 as an avionics technician, specifically ECM systems on the B-52H Stratofortress at Barksdale AFB, LA.

My ASVAB scores, background check, good physical fitness et al. qualified me to choose cryptolinguist or really any enlisted job with an opening, but I chose EWAR because "Electronic Warfare" sounded cool. Genius.

If you join the Air Force as enlisted, my actual advice is to find the most cake job you can, because that will give you more free time to do some college work in preparation for either OCS or to be more hireable when you separate. If you do want to have a foundation for easily-marketable technical/avionics skills, choose something practical and straightforward like engine or electrical work. The more esoteric avionics jobs, like ECM, don't translate as well to the civilian world.

Never plan to make the military a career going in. There's an excellent chance you'll change your mind. That's a decision to be made once you've been in a while, and not before.

Aircraft maintenance isn't a cake job at all. I worked my ass off both in tech school and on the job, especially during Operation Iraqi Freedom. That said, if it appeals to you, it can be rewarding.

Cake jobs in the Air Force include:

3E1X1 – Heating, Ventilation, AC, and Refrigeration (these people literally check building ACs and shit and mostly jack off all day, A+ job)
3E4X3 – Pest Management (same deal)
3F5X1 – Administration (the true Chair Force. These people do BS office work and photocopy shit all day; plus, admin troops gets promoted like mad by mothering senior officers, who also spoil them by, for example, letting them go home early all the time; differs from one command to another, though)

As for cryptolinguist in particular and enlisted intel jobs in general, I'm sure they're attractive to those who qualify. I'm still in contact with a couple of these guys. They move around a lot, so be prepared for that.

Attached: 0AP9pmp.jpg (652x960, 208K)

"no"
yes
rasp or bust

What divo are you?
Class of ship?

the gi bill still exists, not like you can go to college or a technical school user.

Yo, any UK guys? Thinking of joining HM Armed Forces if I can't get into HM Prison Services. I'm thinking of either paratrooper, cavalry crewman, or as a mine warfare specialist in the Royal Navy. Thoughts?

Attached: 1443607547105.jpg (858x536, 147K)

I'm late to respond but I'm fairly certain most rates are NOT five year contracts. When I enlisted as an HM, they said it was four years of actual fleet time, one year of training. They weren't wrong. Therefore, they gave me a five year contract

>Literally the only jobs i can apply for are translator jobs. Wtf was the point of making this an intelligence position if we dont do any actual intelligence work?

For someone who worked in intel... well, it was military intel, after all.

Use your fucking brain. Enlisted crypto guys are going to the grunt work of cryptographic operations, such as translating text. It's

Are you a mathematician and/or computer or software engineer? Can you personally decrypt encrypted information or engineer/program systems capable of decrypting encrypted information? Have you been trained to parse raw intel, as the interviewer asked?

No?

This is why it's best to choose a cake job if you're enlisting in the military, because it's all bullshit on a resume once you get out anyway, especially these days when hiring is massively a buyer's market and they can choose to be incredibly (and absurdly) picky.

Don't get me wrong: I think you probably should have been let into an entry-level GS5 job, even if not directly qualified. I'm sure you'd do fine. But they're going to be picky as fuck.

No one tells you any of this before you enlist or during your enlistment, of course, but surely you must have suspected it after a couple of years in. I did.

>if I can't get into HM Prison Services.

Armed forces first, prison service when you leave. The prison system is a mess at the minute and yeah... Enjoy getting shit in your eyes.

no

True, but it's 31k a year mate.

>31k a year mate
is that good?

Starting rate in the army is £18,488

Ya but thats diff than a civilian job dude
Dont bongs get benefits in your "country"

Dont, unless you are a retard and a vatnik dont

>vatnik
?

>wanting yo join the FFL
>Not knowing what a Vatnik is

How new are you?
A vatnik is stupid ass russian, or sometimes one if the retards that shills for russia

Im not that guy you faggot. Go back to larping in your gear thread

It will help to have degree.

Once you have ALC, and E5, its pretty much all footwork, gotta track down people to give you letters of recommendations, and submit 3 NCOERs. I know that last part will be hard since youre not an NCO yet. But hey, its worth it to go warrant. It just takes effort.

>35P
>easier
Are you new to this thread?

Language school is one of the most difficult training courses in the military. If you fail your language, thats it, needs of army for you, no bonus, but still gotta complete that 5 or 6 year contract. Only about 30% of the class graduate, if even.

You go to basic training first, then you go to OCS, while everyone else goes to AIT.

Airforce scientific applications specialist, or whatever its called.

Can anyone tell me why Staff Sergeants exist? From what I've seen there's no role they fill the rank above or below can't fill.

Yup, i suspected it, but was still told,
>Oh you got a TS/SCI, thats an auto hire no matter what, and your language qualified, you can apply as an analyst or target area analyst at so and so agency.

The fuck I can. My most recent interviews have led me to believe having a TS doesnt mean shit, and having specialized experience is bullshit, most of the interviews it seemed they were looking for well rounded type people who knew a little of everything. If i was a 35M, I wonder how i would get a normal intel job as well? How the fuck does a dude with a degree and no work experience get these jobs?

It honestly, depends on the unit and how they use them. Basically we use the E5 to watch over the junior enlisted, while the E6 does the critical work and tasks, and the E7 oversees all the E5, for the E8.

Yeah seems it’ll be a bit of a pain in the ass, not too bad though. Appreciate the help user.

Alright, fair enough. Thanks, pal.

Thats what stops most people. Is all the footwork.

Trust me, its worth it user. Small ass community of actually competent and motivated people who actually like their jobs. Otherwise they wouldnt have bothered to pursue going warrant, and instead just sat in their comfy zone until retirement.

Also, I have had one episode of self harm years ago and noticed the other the Army no longer lists that as a bar to entry. Anyone know anything about this or would it be worth going to a careers office?

Are you saying you don't bullshit about your work experience. That's how you get your first real civilian job.

At least in the case of the US, you'd be instantly barred even if they don't mention it. If you can get away with not mentioning it, don't mention it.
