user, if I wanted gritty stories about hard men doing hard things I'd watch war movies. Anime appeals to me for three reasons: the moeshit/fanservice, humor, and lack of progressivism. Western movies are usually a lot better at being serious and hard men doing hard things is something that is best suited for a serious medium.
Even cowboy bebop had tons of humor and over the top bullshit and fanservice, and in all honesty while I thouroughly enjoyed it, it felt pretty wierd. And frankly, in the modern anime industry we are not going to get anything like another cowboy bebop or NGE or Jin Roh or anything other than moeshit and edgy shonens that are gonna have cute girls in them anyways, or sports animes which are boring as fuck. Theres a reason "anime is trash" is a meme. in the modern era of anime, its true.
