>wife serves him with divorce papers at the airport
>gives him 1 hour to pack his shit, says she will then call the cops if he is not out of their house
>he takes some clothes and all of his guns (not many but among them is a few he inherited from his dad that are quite precious).
>she allows him to take a car, but specifies it must be the shitty old Dodge Neon they were about to sell. Says if he takes one of the newer cars including a BMW that he owned outright, she would report it stolen.
>He loads his shit into the neon
>tries to get a hotel
>Wifey has frozen bank accounts and credit cards
>Drives out to marina where his late father's 22' Catalina sailboat is anchored
>It has a very small galley and sleeping area
>Starts living there.
>Several days pass
>Major rainstorm
>forgets to close the hatch leading below deck
>sleeping/sitting area fills with water and boat sinks/settles to the bottom of the shallow marina
>he nearly drowns because he was asleep during this time
>escapes but in his panic (he also lost his laptop and wallet which were at the time much more important to his survival) forgets about his guns end up sitting at the bottom of the marina in a duffel for several days

I never saw them but he said they were ruined. He sold a few to a pawn shop for like $50 each. The biggest loss was his dad's Python and his great-grandpa's M1917 that was carried by him in WW1.

He killed himself not long after, before his divorce was finalized, fucking gassed himself with the exhaust from the neon.

Honestly I felt the same way, that suicide was a dumb move, until I got more the details. His wife had been cheating on him for several YEARS with both a man and a woman, a polyamorous couple (black male, latina female) she had met a ceramics class and they had been cohabiting whenever he went away to war. His son was already calling the man in the poly couple "dad", the woman "aunt" and calling the poly couple's kids his brother's and sisters.

The couple were hardcore lefties or at the very least had a phobia of the military because they convinced the wife that my cousin, who would never hurt a fly (he wasn't combat arms in the .mil) would definitely murder her the moment the papers were served, or at least do something incredibly vengeful. This is why everything was already in motion as soon as he returned and why the wife was so eager to call the cops if he didn't play ball. His wife's attorney cited the excellent relationship the polys and their kids had with my cousin's kids to get basically full custody for his wife and the polys. He was in a position where he would see his kids maybe once a year. It was when he received that ruling re: custody that he ended his life.
