you're confused. There's a conventional alpine (alpinist battalion) and airborne (tzanchanim airborne brigade) units. These units have a specific special ops unit within them. Probably not larger than 50-100 troops.

The fact you think special ops doesn't qualify with recon or light infantry shows your level of informity on the subject. The prison guards are the most egregious example. Half of the units listed are given with no description and most of the rest are really just conventional units that actually get to go out and do their jobs, which alone is enough to set them apart from the rest of the Israeli military.

It's because unlike the US military, which is a professional career force of soldiers, the IDF is a conscript army viewed as a sort of citizen militia. This is how it was founded originally in 1948 and the culture around it has endured.

IDF has a whole culture around viewing uniforms, formalities, medals, etc as tacky. It's why they all look terrible when they try to be formal. Their officers actually lack formal wear.

The (apartheid) South African and Rhodesian armies had a somewhat similar culture though not as extreme
