Could the military just use semi-auto rifles? Is full auto really necessary for a rifleman? I've heard the arguments about suppressing fire and such, but wouldn't belt fed weapons be better for that anyway?

The military basically already does. I have never actually known anybody to ever use the burst function on an M4 or M16A2.

Exactly. So why procure full auto rifles if you're not going to use them in full auto?

While generally not worth it it is nice to have in case you need to hose a room full of freedom fighters or human wave attack

Because full auto can actually be viable in limited situations, unlike burst which will always be terrible in M16/M4s.

Also moving to a full auto triggergroup makes the trigger pull better on semi-auto. The burst triggergroup makes it inconsistent and shitty.

Doesn't add any substantial cost, so why not?
The military doesn't have to deal with NFA regs or pay 20k for transferable pre-86 full-autos.

see: and remember vietnam engagement distances weren't very far, and sometimes consisted of poorly trained conscripts blasting full auto at the enemy until their rifles melted or their ammunition was depleted

Because its a case of them preferring to have and not need than need and not have
Plus, it has zero effect on kit, weight, basic function of weapon, ect
So, in reality, theres no reason to remove it

Because being able to do limited suppressing fire as a rifleman is better than not being able to.
Take turns covering while the other moves. Repeat
Take ground
????
Profit

I just wish 3-round burst was legal for civilians. That is all you really need. A decent shot and 3 rounds will find what you're aiming for.

A quality trigger is so much better than burst. A $100 drop in trigger at like 4lbs beats the fuck out of the burst function in a military rifle.

no you dont

its inconsistent fuckery

How about full giggle since it matches the definition of a machine gun either way? The Second Amendment is to guns as the First Amendment is to speech that isn't a threat or call to violence.

Yeah but if 1 round has the possibility to only wound. I can't imagine there is anywhere you can get shot 3 times and survive.

We're fighting a culture war to keep what we have. Getting full autos back at this time seems unlikely.

Burst disrupts your momentum. If you try to push with burst you’ll almost certainly end up janky as you don’t let up on the trigger just right and it resets without going through a full burst. Rapid semi auto allows you to push while constantly pulling the trigger.

mechanically limited burst fire is garbage.

Select fire doesn't add substantial cost or complexity, and while it will probably be rarely used it does make the weapon a more flexible tool which can definitely be used to suppress enemies in a pinch, so why not keep it?

>Is full auto really necessary for a rifleman?
No, but having it never hurt. It doesn't cost you anything extra to have a select fire rifle.

Any reason our soldiers are still using 30 round magazines if they have the ability to go full auto? Why not those 100 rounders?

Question, how old are you?

>Could the military just use semi-auto rifles?
Yes. The British did this with their L1A1 FALs

Its entirely situational.
But hey, if you were engaging kebabs, your gunner is bleeding out 50m from you, and a wall of canned soviet lead between you and him, I imagine youd like the option.

Fourte-ty I am forty.

Then it is too late in your life to train you out of being so fucking stupid.

It would have been faster to just give a reason.

Heavy, bulky, less reliable, take longer to load, more mechanically complex, difficult to index which would result in many of them being dropped, and increasing the strain on logistics over a standardized double stack mag design.

Thanks now I know.

The ban was illegitimate to begin with. The Hughes Amendment didn't pass vote, but was included in the final bill anyway. The full video is on youtube, if you're curious.

Beta C-mags are unreliable as fuck and carrying multiple of them incredibly inconvenient. If we wanted to increase ammo capacity, we would go with coffin mags.

FUCK YOU MORE DAKKA IS ALWAYS NEEDED.

I thought coffin mags died off because of feeding issues?

They're harder than a normal double-stack/double-feed mag to manufacture properly, but unlike the beta c-mag, can actually fit in a pouch.

Straight-semi would probably be better than having a burst mode. The additional mechanical and interface complexity causes failures sometimes, both mechanical and operator.

Full auto definitely has its uses, though. The M4A1 brought back full auto for special ops because of the usefulness in confined spaces, then they put heavier barrels on them to sustain full auto fire longer, and the Marines are going with a sustained full auto capability in their new standard issue infantry rifle, the M27, probably based on lessons learned from the M4A1.

It's not just suppressive fire. With the new armor, sometimes you've got to keep shooting a guy to keep him distracted until your bullets find his uncovered flesh (or just drill your way in), or he shoots back while you're figuring your headshot. Also, you can come around a corner, kick a door down, or hide yourself alone from approaching enemies, and suddenly have three or five guys standing close together right in front of you, and you need your gun to be a scythe.

You can shoot pretty fast with semi-auto, but for these kinds of situations, you probably can't pull your trigger 20 times in 2 seconds.

And yet it's still the rule of law with even the likes of Rand Paul the supposed libertarian among the supposedly conservative republicans are doing fuck all about it to challenge it. No one with any sort of power actually gives a fuck about helping us beyond occasionally paying lip service to the issue for votes. Meanwhile if little Timmy so much as looks at an old black and white picture of a cap gun the antis are ready to try to pass a new bill to take away even more of our rights.

This, maybe when the boomers are all dead or senile will voting matter again

The problem would be that the military is using "civilian" weaponry because it is so dangerous. Libs would have a field day.

I want to legally buy full auto and it is going to be harder if the military doesn't even have it on their standard rifle.

Honestly the only use would be for clearing a room where you know for a fact no civilian is inside

I mean honestly if you live in the country, you can keep illegal firearms and nobody would know. Buddy of mine doesn't even have a gun license yet and he has three 1911s in a box under his bed, and no neighbor for five miles.
