For Vietnam specifically, I think they were so hard to beat because their cause had a lot of support, in the North and also in the South, it made it difficult for the US to kill all of it off, especially so when they were fighting guerrillas. If you also want to look more broadly on it, the public didn't want the war nor see it's value, something I would say is generally different when it comes to ISIS.

But I think the biggest difference between ISIS and North Vietnam is that North Vietnam had many, many supporters, and a trained armed forces that knew how to properly use their training and knowledge of their surroundings to their advantage. ISIS was using not only far fewer soldiers but less well trained ones in some cases, in countries full of people that hated them and wanted them gone. But I think overall a large difference between these two lay in the numbers of combatants, ISIS simply doesn't have enough to win.

Our original strategic objective in Korea was achieved, the secondary objectives and the objectives developed after we pushed them to the 38th parallel are the ones that we failed at, mostly because China provided NK as much support as they could. In order for them to maintain this, they had to sustain eye wateringly high casualties, regardless, we BTFO them off of their original position. U.S Statistical Victory, U.S Objective Victory, or Objective Stalemate if you count restoring the original border lines as anything but a victory. We kicked ass in Vietnam until we pulled out and literally left and tried to let them fend for themselves.

Wars of attrition, guerrilla warfare where your enemy can send many millions of their own into a never ending meat grinder. They have just enough weapons and just good enough technology to put up some sort of fight, and they have many times the manpower. Quality VS Quantity. They have limitless morale and we had very limited morale, every casualty was many times more effective at persuading the public out of the war and spreading the anti-war message.

Not to mention, soldiers are fighting this war that do not want to be there, do not understand why they are there. There is a strong peace movement. The Vietnam war produced just enough casualties to make the draft a bad idea and to reflect badly on the hawk's, etc. The anti-war movement was very good at oversimplifying every last bit of the conflict and took advantage of the emotional state of U.S families at the time. The U.S wasn't in a good position to sustain any sort of casualties so when you had to announce that you lost X or Y number of soldiers it never looked good. Even if the enemy had lost 10 times as many as you. (In some cases they did)

It's not so much that the U.S military lost as much as the U.S public stopped wanting to send people into a conflict that it did not support. A political victory was won for the NVA and VC, not so much a military victory. Statistically and if you went engagement by engagement, battle by battle, the U.S comes out on top every time. We only lost when we decided to pack up and let the south defend for itself, which it obviously was incapable of doing given what we know now about what happened after we left. While we were there we pushed their shit in with soldiers who were sub-par and didn't want to be there in the first place. Neck yourself if you think any of this constitutes a crushing defeat.
