He got lucky at Shiloh. The Confederate western command never recovered from Johnston's death

Literally every battle in the Overland Campaign involved Grant throwing men at Lee's trenches and breastworks, taking at least 2:1 casualties, then disengaging and attempting to flank Lee and cut his supply lines with Lee beating him to the spot first.

Burnside did the same thing once and got fired for it.
