A gun isn't always the right tool, though. Unless the person attacking you has a gun/knife you're going to jail if you kill them most of the time.

I'd rather spray my target with mist than go to jail/spend hours in court over a murder. Unless the other person has a gun, or knife (and they're in very close proximity to you) or it's a large group of guys, using a gun on them 90% of the time will land you in jail, especially if you live in a state that isn't favourable to gun owners like NJ. Also strong pepper spay is extremely effective

Nope. His jurisdiction has laws that allow him to pull a gun in situations that don't yet warrant deadly force.

People have developed this weird belief that so long as unarmed thugs ignore your orders and quietly converge on you, there's nothing you can do about it. Like it's some kind of legal loophole to rob people with impunity.

In the real world, you warn them to stay back or you'll take it as a threat. Continuing towards you is an implicit admission that they are in fact a threat. When they don't stop, you draw a gun and warn them that they'll be shot. If they continue, then they're a threat willing to face deadly force and you shoot. The point is to setup situations where their behavior is an unambiguous statement of their intentions.

You're just as likely to go to jail for using pepper spray. You're either going to get accused of assaulting the other guy, or you're going to catch bystanders and legitimately get charged. Saw a fight in a club once where one guy sprayed the other, hundreds of people were effected in some way. Nobody is sympathetic to a guy spraying someone either.

You know why cops walk away from egregious shootings? Because they stick to the script. Doesn't matter if it was overkill, if other options were available, or what. There's case law and policy protecting these exact actions, and so they don't deviate from them. The same applies to us. I recall a case where two guys jumped/beat someone unconscious and were kicking/jumping on his head; a bystander killed one of them to stop what was clearly serious bodily injury at the very least. The bystander got charged with murder. Had he shot the guy, it would have been completely uncontroversial. But instead he stabbed him in the heart. The legal justification was exactly the same, but the novelty of a knife being used led the DA to charge the guy with murder. He eventually Paul Harrell'd his way out of the court room.

Just stick to the script.
