Makes one wonder why Japan can't do it, who are crying for a 5th gen fighter for now 2 decades.

Okay so they're starting building an AESA?
That doesn't mean they've got a functional 5th gen fighter out, genius. Japan had AESA equipped fighters in the 90s
Producing an AESA radar does not a 5th gen fighter make. Many countries make AESA radars, and many have 5th gen experimental aircraft.
USA blocked the export of AESA radar technology as attempt to sell them more F-35. The fact that Korea is now developing a state of the art AESA radar just showcase that Korea is serious about it.
Adding to that, they're contracting SAAB for support and evaluation of its AESA radar.

Yes, and?
The KF-X is pretty much supposed to be the Gripen of the 5th gen fighters. Mostly supposed to replace old F-4 and F-5 aircraft.
Indonesia has also 20% workshare and wants to put it in service.
Where will they source the engine? Who will and who can they buy from?
>Makes one wonder why Japan can't do it
...You're aware the japanese F2 was the first operational fighter to have an AESA radar, right?
You're aware making a plane all squared and flat doesn't automatically makes it less visible to radar than some other designs, right? Especially with ordnance hanging from its underwings and fuselage?
tl;dr, koreans kore'ing as always. Call me back when this is something else than a CGI or plastic model kit, or when their smartphones don't catch fire on their own.
At least japs made their ATDX/XF3 fly, and with national (shitty) engines.
Eurojet, PW or GE.
>national (shitty) engines
What makes you say that?
>...You're aware the japanese F2 was the first operational fighter to have an AESA radar, right?
yes, and? No one claimed that Korea is the first one deploying AESA radars.
>You're aware making a plane all squared and flat doesn't automatically makes it less visible to radar than some other designs, right? Especially with ordnance hanging from its underwings and fuselage?
There is maybe mission types where ordnance > RCS
Because Japan doesn't spend much money on their military, let alone expensive R&D
>yes, and? No one claimed that Korea is the first one deploying AESA radars.
No, the claim was that Korea is somehow capable of making a 5th gen while Japan can't because they're BEGINNING to make an AESA - something Japan has had for 30 years.
Yet.
F-22 with twin engines?
>F-22 with twin engines
all my boner if Japan and Korea jointly pooled cash to develop the hybrid F-22/ F-35
>instead of following some pipedream
>Korea just create the modern Gripen.
why wouldn't they be able to just buy American or europoor? Decadent Worst Korea is on fine terms with the declining western pig empires.
Its an F-22 clone with less complicated exhaust nozzles.
>Another F-35-sized twin engine stealth fighter for export
I wonder how it compares to the Chinese equivalent?

Korea has a bigger economy than Russia. What's your point?
The Koreans are sailing through advancing their aircraft development capabilities. As points out, the resources aren't necessarily the issue, it's having an established industry with the capability to actually design and build the thing. They know this and have been working up to it. KAI's first plane was a turboprop trainer/light attack plane that came out in the late 90's. They jumped from that to the T-50 lead-in fighter trainer, a supersonic jet. The newer versions are basically 4th-generation jet fighters under the aegis of "light combat aircraft." I believe they can make the 5th-generation jump.
Apparently a good chunk of the airframe is 3d-printed and can''t be disassembled-the only reason this thing is public knowledge is that it had to be shipped across China in one piece...
Japan spends more on its military than all but 7 of the countries in the world.
