The engines are located in a different area. They learned that the front end of the aircraft is important for aerodynamics. The old jets that you mention were basically like first generation machines. They had a long way to go. The wide open front end causes problems with aerodynamics at high speed, including air entering the engine. Basically the old jets had an engine in the nose and exhaust coming out of the rear. Its the air intake for the engine. Most modern jets have a cone instead to house radars and other stuff, and because it perfeorms better ar high speeds, and relocate the air intakes to the sides or to the belly. The round front intake is a smart solution to feed air to the engine while keeping a streamlined overall profile.
The engine is not in the front on those jets you literal retard.
