The RCN used to be one of the biggest navies in the world. Period.
But then some smart guy said "How about we save a buck or two and just let America protect us?"
Canada used to have the 3rd best navy in NATO behind the US and UK. Now they are one of the weakest... and no one seems to care. Trudeau hasn't spent a minute thinking of it since being in office, the only thing on his mind is diversity and tranny rights.
Remember when canada actually stood on it's own and didn't rely on the USA to defend it? I sure do.
Can I get a president that just manifest destiny's the fuck out of canada and mexico? It's the USA's birthright to control north america. For only we can show the socialists and the poor the way forward to success.
>and no one seems to care
That's because , that user has it. Why spend the money when America will do it for you? Canada isn't all that interested in power projection.
>Remember when THE WORLD actually stood on it's own and didn't rely on the USA to defend it?
FTFY
Oh ya, I forgot all of the western european NATO member fucking shirking their GDP allocation on defense.
Relying solely upon a neighboring country for your national defense seems a dangerous road to travel. Eventually, what separates you from being an autonomous territory of that country? If tomorrow, next year, in 10 years, whenever, the US decides Canada is better off under American management, who will tell them no? Hell, should they be told no?
The argument is that Canada wouldn't be able to stop it anyways even with a well supplied military.
>the biggest threat to canada is homophobia
t. trudeau
when your president has that mindset and the people are ok with it, you deserve to be taken over. darwinism basically.
Damned if they do, damned if they don't. At the very least, a well funded and organized Canadian military could be of greater assistance to the US military and NATO in general. If Australia and Britain also took their armed forces more seriously, they might even be able to form some pan-Commonwealth sort of alliance with some actual weight on the world stage. But no, just make Uncle Sam foot the bill for everything, what could possibly go wrong?
>But no, just make Uncle Sam foot the bill for everything, what could possibly go wrong?
The US likes it that way too and they lean on other nations to reduce their military strength.
Like how the US pressured Diefenbaker to shutdown the Arrow project in order to make us reliable on American made aircraft.
Remember when we had any navy to defend the largest sea border in the world?

If we (the US) get into all out war with China, as unlikely as that is, we will need countries like Canada and the UK to be able to keep Russia from getting uppity, because we will be stretched too thin. Russia could use that as an opportunity to take the arctic if Canada doesn't get more serious.
Let them weaken. When the nationalist fervor peaks in america we will swallow them.
Is the Canadian government so weak as to obey the commands of the American defense industry? Had Avro and Diefenbaker told the US to fuck off and let them build their damn plane, what would the US have done?
If American becoming an actual threat instead of endless treasure vault is what it takes for its allies to take their own militaries seriously, so be it.
Their Halifax class frigates are a really nice bit of kit though, and they have decent numbers of those. The thing that really screwed over their navy were the subs they bought from the UK. That was a massive clusterfuck. Canada needs at least 4 proper nuclear powered subs to patrol the north atlantic and arctic, but i dont see how that can happen anytime soon.
>Is the Canadian government so weak as to obey the commands of the American defense industry? Had Avro and Diefenbaker told the US to fuck off and let them build their damn plane, what would the US have done?
Our economy is nearly totally reliant on the US. Trade has a LOT of power
We tried to build a fleet of nuclear subs, but the US didn't let us
The real reason it was cancelled is because the idea of an interceptor aircraft was already becoming obsolete. The F-4 which was in development outperformed the Arrow in every category.
I suppose that's true, but the idea of a country that only exists as long as a more powerful neighbor allows it to be a little odd. If the US turns hostile, Canada has nowhere to turn to. I guess that's a sort of power disparity that doesn't exist between any other two neighboring first-world countries though.
*I find the idea of a country, gah, I need a nap.
It's the nature of a superpower. Any neighbour of the USA could be steamrolled. Only the Soviet Union could rival them
>what is Britain and Ireland
Maybe. If we had bought the Phantom. Instead, to answer to one of the largest layoffs in the history of the country, a huge brain drain and ended up buying up the fucking Starfighter and Voodoo.
Cancelling the engines was dumber though. A Phantom modded with Iroquois engines would have been sweet as fuck.
What was great about the engines?
Turbojet with 26000 lbs of thrust with full AB and 19500 lbs without. So imagine a F-4 with 52000 lbs of thrust on full AB instead of 36000.
