From what I've heard it wasn't as concentrated as movies like saving private ryan make it seem. The beach was much longer and the machine gun nests were farther apart. What this meant is that instead of a 50 yard dash into a MG42 it was more like a long trudge up a slight slope while covered in cold water, wondering if you were going to get shot. Which is much worse.

Honestly though, for the Russians it was pretty much an average Tuesday.

And yet Severloh's 2 MG42s still covered so much beach that he could kill 2800.

Omaha didn't really have many concrete fortifications, and those it did have weren't facing out to sea but rather into the draws coming up from the beach. The famous German defenders like Severloh were all in open trenches. That screenshot is actually much more realistic than the Saving Private Ryan scene.

Saying "all were British" is not entirely accurate since the coast guard did indeed do lots of the driving, however many were manned by British drivers such as those who transported the 2nd and 5th Ranger battalions among others

In some ways it was WORSE than SVP depicts. In real life, at low tide, Omaha Beach is more like 500 yards wide, not the ~100 we see in the movie. You had 5x as much open ground to cross in front of dozens of MG42's. Further, in the movie, Tom Hanks is in the first wave, and it only takes him ~10 minutes to go from the boat to the top of the cliff. In real life, it took all day, and nearly no one from the first wave survived. Something like +90% casualties.

So he actually didnt kill on the beach he killed after they got ashore and funneled. That's insane.

I knew a man who actually piloted an amphibious lander on d-day, a bullet hit the viewing port and fragmented, and he caught a few of those fragments in the cheek. He kept on driving throughout the attack though, and never got treatment for the fragments. He said it took him 14 years to dig the last piece out, as he would periodically nick them while he was shaving and dig them out with tweezers. He can also drink an entire bottle of stag in 2.5 seconds.

There was a massive naval bombardment by American and British ships, as well as bombing raids. The fortifications weren't all knocked out, the large guns on Pointe du Hoc that were among the targets had already been moved (so everything sent in that area hit nothing of value), and fog obscured targets.
Before every amphibious invasion there was a bombardment. They rarely did anything substantial to destroy the defenses.

Keep in mind pic related was particularly concentrated bombardment, allies had tens of miles of coastline to cover and it simply was not possible to devote fire to every emplacement

The attack was mostly a surprise. The Germans knew something was coming, but not what or where. If the Allies spent two weeks bombing and shelling each bunker into oblivion, their cover would have been blown. The whole plan to trick the Germans into defending Calais instead of Normandy would have been wasted. German reinforcements would have been ready and waiting. And as we can see in the Pacific theater, even two weeks wouldn't have meant the landing would have been easy. We bombed and shelled Iwo Jima for a month or something, and it was still a bloodbath. And the Japs on Iwo couldn't get reinforcement or resupply, the Germans in Normandy could.

The planes were flying perpendicular to the beach at Omaha, which means that they only had 1 shot to hit a bunker before peeling off and retreating. Utah beach is oriented much more North-South and the planes were able to fly along the coastline and essentially carpet bomb every emplacement, which led to a much higher amount of emplacements being neutralized than Omaha.

Also, the Naval gunfire was an absolute shitshow at Omaha. Rockets and artillery fired from the Ships were supposed to crater the beach creating cover and knock out some of the obstacles, but the closest any of the bombardments impacted were several hundred yards inland. One of the Admirals whose name I forget at the moment was successfully able to get the aerial bombardment time at Omaha cut in half from 40 to 20 minutes in order to give his ships some extra time to bombard(basically a dick wagging move by the Admiral).

If he killed that many people out of the 4000 or so then everyone else on the beach must of just been sat on their hands doing nothing to stop the landing. I dont doubt he killed hundreds but no way he was keeping count that high
