How important is case trimming?
Do I have to trim .308 brass if I'm using it in a bolt gun for plinking?
How important is case trimming?
Yes. Unless you like bombs.
your shit wont chamber more than likely. forcing it to seat my kaboom. quit being a lazy fuck and trim it
If nothing else, get a Lee case length gauge/holder and lockstud for like $12. Don't blow your dumb ass up.
After I made this thread I realized there was no point in reloading if I wasn't going to do it right. So I went and bought a hornady trimmer (I was doing it with a file before).
Holy shit I remember you from the reloading thread. I'm glad you are gonna do this right.
>this is reloading thread now
Has anyone ever reloaded sabots for a rifle? I want to duplicate the .22 sabot 30-06 rounds the US army had in WW2.
I think you have me confused with someone else. I just started reloading within the last few days. I have been lurking on the reloading threads though
Yes, it's insanely simple.

Ayyy negroes, rate my blue bastards
Is this a good deal for beginning reloading?
dropping blue pills took on a whole new meaning
I don’t reload because my PTR rapes my brass and kicks it out with the force of a thousand year Reich
Ayy my third world tier reloading brother. I used to use a mallet to seat primers before I figured out I had my press assembled wrong
They look good!
lel I remember you too, you guys are wild
Pretty slick pc job there. I just reloaded about 600 rds of a similar style last night. Will post pic inna min
Thanks, to anyone looking to get into powder coating, go with Eastwood right away. My Harbor Freight powder coated ones like ass.
>somebody saved my meme
Ok senpai, do you autistically set each bullet on its base to get a flawless powder coating layer? I tumble them and dump inna wire basket. They have some blems but they shoot fine.
No, using normal loads the case necks will crack long before the total lenght becomes a problem
I did just that. Bought the dark ford blue. Works good. Word of advice: dont preheat your new bullets too much before dumping them in your powder coating tub. I did that and made a big lead rice crispy ball.
adding to this, my cases start out at 2.005"
After 8-10 firings of mostly neck sizing they are about 2.008" while max spec is 2.015", not accounting for chamber tolerances and I have about 1-2 cases out of 50 crack each loading.
>do you autistically set each bullet on its base to get a flawless powder coating layer?
Absolutely, lmao, we're talking grabbing gently with tweezers, tapping lightly on the rod of the vibratory tumbler to knock off excess, then placing on my tray on base. The ones that fall over in the oven go in the melt me down later container.
I don't preheat at all, just a light acetone bath first to remove any oils.
Hmmm, may try that next time. I usually put a batch in the oven to dry after water quenching, for about 5 mins. Then PC. Just make sure they are warm, not hot, before PC. Nice to see a fellow cheapo reloader on the 4chins. I started reloading about a year ago. Now im casting. Its been a very enjoyable journey.
Hey they come out nice, but Nigga u crazy. Just pump an dump. Toss the ugly ones in the melt down later pot. I can do 500 or more in about an hour this way. You can cull them while resizing.
Super fun and very satisfying. I run a pretty small operation.
I just can't do it, they have to go on their base
Lol if it makes you happy im happy. I have grown to appreciate a little white trash efficiency.
I feel your pain, autism-kun, I don't trust powder dispensers so I measure every charge on my triple beam.
If I shot more I probably would too desu. What's the deal with PCing 223? I see some people do, some people say don't for rounds with that higher velocity, ect. I only do 9mm and 380 now.
I havent ventured into 223 yet. From what i have seen, if you make your alloy hard enough, and keep velocity below 2,600 or so, no gas check is needed. Make sure the bullets are oversized appropriately.
I am only casting 9mm and 300aac subs. Ordering some super hard ingots from rotometals before i try supersonics.
Sidenote: picking up babbys 1st 1911 today. Gotta get setup to reload 45 now. StawppanPowwahhhhh! Yeeeyeee!
>gotta get setup to reload 45 now.
>tfw you want to buy new calibers so you can cast and reload them
I might get a 357 lever wheel combo for that
I sprayed case lube in my eye. Am I going to die?
No, just blind
I hadn't heard of these shots before. If I shoot an m855 (62gr) out of a 18" 300wm could I hit 5000 fps? Would this penetrate level 4 body armor at say 100 yards?
It's making the idea of a Nemo Battle rifle tempting
Why is priming so fucking difficult? Some cases I end up deforming the primer cause I have to fight it so hard
Are you using military brass with a staked primer pocket? You need to swage those. Other than that, only thing I can think of is that maybe you are using a large primer seating head while trying to seat small primers, and they aren't lining up correctly.
I would think 4000 fps or maybe 4400 fps would be more realistic but I'm not sure really, gotta find load data. I'm trying to find data about the original military load, since I'm gonna shoot it from my Garand, but I haven't found it yet.
I'm loading 5.56
PPU and Hornady brass are priming nicely, but the one I'm having trouble with has a headstamp I can't read
Post a nice picture of the ones that won't prime nicely, I bet you they are staked primers.
Yup, that a staked primer. The ring around the primer pocket is where they staked it, locking the primer into the case. The LC headstamp is Lake City, they make military ammo. You need to buy a primer pocket swaging tool or a set of primer pocket swaging dies. Alternatively, you can remove the swage with a chamferring/deburring tool but you need to be careful when doing that, you don't want to remove too much material.
Thanks. They go in considerably easier after chamfering
>I have about 1-2 cases out of 50 crack each loading.
Try annealing the necks every 3rd loading, see if that helps. Stand the cases in a pan of water, with the waterline coming about 1/4” shy of the shoulder. Using a propane torch, heat each case neck until it’s glowing. Then knock the case over so it’s submerged. Bam! Annealed.
If it works out for you, you can buy or make annealing jigs to speed the process up.
Nice, good luck bud
First loads
Why do match bullets normally not have cannelures?
Cannelures are used when you need to crimp a bullet so it will not come loose during semi automatic or rapid fire, you tend to shoot slow or single load for matches. Also the bullets with cannelures are not always consistent from bullet to bullet to bullet which will throw off accuracy
Reloading bump. Post ammo.
Nice. Those are your very first? Enjoy that feel, friend.
Yeah I went and shot em today. I spent 30 minutes shooting and an hour looking for brass
Fuck yes. Everytime I shoot a nice group or evaporate a varmint with my handloads I get a half chubby.
How will dies react to steel case?
I wouldn't attempt to reload steel case unless it was a last resort during the apocalypse. You will damage your dies over time and chances are the cases are berdan primed, you will have to convert them to boxer primed cases which is a fuckload of work.
When do you anneal cases? After trimming?
