Oh, and one more thing (I completely misunderstood your post) - the clamps are that close together because of the barrel size difference on Mini-14's. It gets thicker the further back towards the gas block you go, so that AccuStrut doesn't entirely fit the 580-series that well.

It seems to work well in its current configuration.
