I'm 29 years old and I hate my job/career path. Have a bachelors' degree, wife, and young kid.
Considering the military (AF or Navy) for the opportunities and change plus I love shooting shit. Am I retarded?
I'm 29 years old and I hate my job/career path. Have a bachelors' degree, wife, and young kid.

What is your degree in?
Information Systems, Computer Science.
Get an actual trade, and ditch the kids they only dig into your Pontiac firebird and leather jacket budget.
You'll probably be even more bored doing that
You will be underwhelmed with the amount of breaking shit you will do.
You will make life difficult for wife and young kid.
Just get a job, work towards masters and make enough money that you can shoot shit on your own.
>joining AF/Navy to shoot guns
Yes, you're retarded. Join the Army and do it soon or watch the window of opportunity for your LARP dreams close in your face forever. You wanna look a thing your future grandson and tell him you were a pussy all your life? No? Cmon and help us Crusade then.
It's not so much that I'm bored though as just unhappy. It has it's interesting moments but overall it pisses me off more than anything. Could be my particular company, but this is the 4th company I've worked for in the field and I can't say any of the previous jobs captivated me either.
yes youre retarded. welcome to the us military.
*look at your future
>guilty of phone posting
Masters are useless in my field. It's really all about certifications
Then get those certs so that you can buy a house in the woods that you can work from home at and shoot shit while not working.
You're right. But I can't find the motivation to because of my disdain for the field. Maybe up the ladder would solve my dilemma.
It could. An MBA could be something to consider. I would say that if you hate the field at least use it to allow you to do the things you want to do.
In the military you will not necessarily be able to do the things you want to do.
Maybe work towards a goal like getting a job in a particular company or industry that you would feel proud of like AI, Self driving cars, space etc. And use that as motivation to do better in life.
Quit being a fag. Life is a dog shit fucking nightmare for 90% of us. Do you want to live forever or something? Enlist and feel the motivation of knowing somewhere out there, some piece of shit is training to kill you and your friends.
>Information Systems, Computer Science.
with these skills and training, you literally rule the world.
get a grip buddy. just find a job with a company that is comfortable with good pay/benefits
grass is always greener, yaddayadda
your job doesn't have to be your life
you have a wife and child to fulfill yourself with
just keep your nose to the grindstone. save money. pay off debt. become financially independent.
then go on from there. your married with children you gave up your freedom to pursue wild tangent fantasy personal interests on a whim. that's what people stay single and childless for
buckle down and drop your job. take care of your wife / kid. this is being an adult
>drop your job.
*do your job
is you kid really 15?
Sounds like you’re just a lazy faggot
No my kids 1
Yeah that too partially. I mean I'm fit, I keep a clean house, but holy fuck do I have a problem conjuring motivation to do anything related to career
I think my location is a big issue with finding another job. I live in kind of a small town and already commute 40 min to work a day for one of the few tech jobs around here.
Nearest big city with lots of job choices in the field is over an hour and a half away and I really don't see a 3 hour commute working into my schedule. Can't move either because my family has me anchored here for a little while as I also take care of my sick mother as well as hospice tier grandparents on both our sides.
But my family and hobbies do fufill me, so I'll keep my eye out for another opportunity that might make me a bit happier at work.
Join a activity club, find a hobby like building guns or get co-workers into shooting and stuff. Plenty of opportunities
What's a good trade to learn? Looking to learn something that pays decent (not necessarily great) and has reliable work. Wanna move to Idaho, Montana or Wyoming, if that means anything
draftsman, not in the military. I mean drawing plans/specs and getting permits for buildings.
Google North Dakota Oil jobs.
You're welcome
I'm in a similar situation. I'm two years younger then you, but hate the job I have and just have a bitch of a time finding anything else. I was considering Army, though.
I'm two years older and had a good welding job leading to a career for a few years got situated with house, wife, car and spare car, 2 dogs, no kids because I'm not retarded.
I did security for 2 years and I'm actually at this moment waiting for a welding test to go back in to it.
fuck all of security there is no pride on the job and all the companies suck ass. o got all the toys and sone training but I missed out on a few tens of thousands of dollars in those two years.
I'm not comparing army v security but I was used to something and it took s shit ton of work to change. now I'm angry, poorish and got less experience that I did before and my CV looks a bit retarded
If you want to shoot shit why be air force or navy?
Idk cause they use a gun every once in a blue moon which is more time then my 24/7 on call job permits me to. I have an Air Force buddy who's a security officer and he gets to shoot all the time. I know it's not as much as infantry but if there's some gun shit involved that'd be cool cause shooting guns at my work is currently frowned upon
Your grammar and grasp on the English language looks a bit retarded too. I think I'd take being an articulate family man over your pile of autism any day.
I got turned down for a permanent position with the oil company I interned at because I mentioned in passing that I had no desire to work/live in N. Dakota. Just as well, I didn't go to grad school so I could live in a fucking trailer in fucking nowhere.
>Join military
>They notice you have a bachelors degree
>Make you do the job you hated in the civilian world because they need those skills.
>Considering the military
Why? You want to become fertilizer?
Don't we all eventually?
Yes, but some of us plan on living to old age and enjoying life along the way.
Well, if he comes out with a Secret or Top Secret clearance, he could be making bank in the contracting biz.
Those things are worth like $80-100k
If you do anything other than aviation or special forces, then the USAF and USN are a total waste of time. In either case, your chance of 'shooting shit' in either branch is well under 1%. Well under 0.1%, actually.
Try to get an air-national guard pilot slot or be a weekend warrior in the regular guard. That would be my advice. You will be 100% miserable in the full-time big boy USN and USAF given your current life situation, where you will be unable to just slam alcohol 24/7 and plough through legions of whores to help you forget the live-sucking vampire that is your chain of command.
Lol this dude is gonna kill himself one day, I'm calling it. He expects to make 6 figures without working hard and living uncomfortably. Won't be until he's like 40 and living with back pains anyway that he understands he squandered his real hard working years and now has no shot at retirement. Shame really. Lazy, pampered man-babies have become so common these days...
Join the Reserves or national guard.
You get to play soldier with out the daily commitment.
Plus it’s like a mini vacation from your normal shit.
Accept you have to do work on your vacation.
>so I could live in a fucking trailer in fucking nowhere.
unfortunately for the timid and lazy would-be job candidates, this is everybody's misconception about working in ND without even looking into it very much.
protip: if you are a valuable employee with valuable skills & training, you do not have to live "in a fucking trailer in the middle of nowhere"
I lived in ND, worked in the oilfields, made $100K/year +/-
and i was able to live in a city, in a nice neighborhood, in a nice apartment, w/d in unit, with garage and other amenities. all for less than $700/month
literally shovelled $10k/month into my bank account.
how did i do this?
i used my brain.
negotiate properly and choose with discretion
living and working in ND oilfields is highly doable with more than acceptable living arrangements & quality of life if you are not some diamond dozen ex-con desperate for any crumbs a desperate shitty second rate company is willing to hire
use your head, negotiate a fair and reasonable employment agreement with a good company. stay away from shitty fly-by-nite second rate companies and you'll be fine
Are you a mud logger or a roughneck? Do you have at least a BS in geology?
Yeah, the MS is usually what you need to unlock the 130k starting jobs in the air conditioning in Houston, but last year I saw Exxon pick up a few geos without a MS. It might just be a pilot program, or it could be the start of a trend.
Then again, you'd have to work for Exxon. Which has its issues.
How do reserves work? Do you have to live within x miles of a base?
So you think the military is going to be easier than civilian life? HA! I've got a bridge to the land of gold and blow jobs I wanna sell you. How much money you got? That's how much it costs.
I have degree in finance from a good school. Im thinking about marine ocs since im still young (23) and id like to do soemthing on my own and just bank all the money I'd make. Is this a bad idea?
>Waaaaa I'm an unmotivated bitch with a degree and a good company job
Stop being fucking retarded and if you hate your company that much go find a different job in the same field st a new company.
Joining Military is pointless unless we are in a real war. You'll be sitting on a base while your wife cheats on you. Stay a civilian.
>diamond dozen
Dime a dozen you fucking idiot
No, it's dime in a dozen you mongoloid fucking idiot. Meaning 10/12
Never said anything about easier faggot. Just different and hopefully offering better opportunity that'll give me much more purpose in my work. Never once did I say shit about making my life easier you little cuckboi
BWAAAHHAHAHA listen here you lazy sack of civilian shit, you wouldn't last even a month in fucking basic. You're too old, and too whiney. The fact youre considering enlisting just because of what you think you'll get out of it shows your mentality is better suited for Gay4Pay. If you aren't willing to live in a "trailer park" to make 6 figures as a roughneck, and aren't enlisting to serve your country..... HA!!!!!! You'll set a national record for fastest washout DD ever. Your wife will cheat on you (with me) literally the day after you're sent off because I'll outrank you (despite being younger than you) and actually have the nuts to work hard and do what needs to be done. Enjoy paying child support, your 1 year old will be calling me daddy for now on.
>I'll fuck your wife
>You're kid will call me daddy
I can't even tell who is cucking who in this thread rn
This is the most boomer post I've seen yet.
Idk who the fuck you are mixing up and talking to here bud but you're just retarded and I'll leave it at that. Manlet detected
Lol angry manlet fucked up not understanding raising another man's kid is cuckery good eye
OP is getting massively cucked in the scenario underage user
>billy the bad ass never served 29 year old civvie
>thinking about joining the AF/Navy to shoot guns (played call of duty last night and decided he wants to do high speed shit without putting in any effort to get in shape or having the mentality to risk life and limb. Has done exactly 0 research)
>literally needs someone/thing to motivate him despite already having a wife and kid who he should be working his ass off for in the first place
Oh Jesus, my sides already hurt from training obliques yesterday, please stop before I really fuck your wife just enough times to make her unable to get off on your micro penis
I wouldn't raise your kid. I'd make your kid wash the floor of my home while I spend the child support checks you're sending me on dip and Miller lite
Protip : you don't actually shoot guns much in the military, a few hundred rounds a year at most, in a combat specialty, otherwise even less than that.
All military wives eventually have sex with Tyrone. Every single one of them.
>Grasp on the English language looks a bit retarded too.
Something about a pot and a kettle of a darker persuasion..
This. Raising anothers kid is the absolute most beta mega omega thing to do. This is never something to be proud of. You are raising anothers genetic material. The material that FUCKED your sexual partner. You are investing your time and money to raise something that is NOT yours.
The absolute damage control of this guy lol please keep posting your short man syndrome anger is too funny.
If it makes you feel any better, OP, I'm 29, and in kind of the same situation as you, minus the wife and kid. So if you're retarded, I must be extra retarded. Wanna join the Nasty Girls together so we can coolguy .mil things on the weekend?
Please refer to this thread:
If you'll allow me to pay the doubles advocate for a moment. You see, for all intensive purposes, it means the same thing. It's just a tough doggie dog world.
>doubles advocate
Thanks for the chuckle. Right arm
>$80k-100k
>CS
>making bank
thats literally pauper pay
Opinions like yours are a diamond dozen.
It's a tough call. I think of it like trading one bad path for another that is just as strenuous and mediocre. When you join, they will put you wherever they want and you will have to do everything they ask, even if you don't agree with it.
My two cents is that a lot of this is a mix of what's going on around you and the things that are bothering you in your own mind. Shooting is good, but it won't be what you will be doing everyday in the military. Mostly boring stuff. So, I see shooting as something that you do on you off days to relax your mind.
I have my share of shitty jobs and I doubt that the world will change anytime soon. So, I think it's about understanding your playing field and creating a good long-term strategy based on what you have at hand.
Sorry for the monologue...
Same age, same field as you (comp Sci) and I also feel like my job is a dead end. Just mix it up. I'm hopefully signing up at my local fire brigade soon as a volunteer. Doing the entry fitness test tomorrow.
No.
>background: enlisted medic in air guard, went to college, now commissioned active duty usaf, still medical
A couple of thoughts:
You will be going from a system that's designed to be at least semi-functional because it wants to make money to a system that's largely broken because everyone is salaried and many people seek to minimize the amount of work they have to do.
Also, you work in IT. I'm your average "user is the computer guy" dude in my office. Always have been. The IT in the military (where we try to design our systems to survive attacks from other countries) is MISERABLE. The security requirements drive latency for every conceivable operation through the roof. You will go insane. And you will also be the guy everyone else turns to when their wifi won't connect (hint: after you've told them to restart and they don't do it, just restart their computer for them) or they've forgotten how to map a printer (even though you made a powerpoint with pictures that details all 3 steps of the process). You DO NOT want this life.
Also, as mentioned already, you won't shoot guns in the military. I've shot an M16A2 once, 11 years ago. I shot 50 rounds to sight in and 50 rounds to qualify. While in school as a guardsman, I went to my local range (northern MN) 2-3x/week. Unless you go into a combat field specifically, your exposure to guns will be near-nil. And the combat-related folks may not want a 29-year-old computer guy.
Finally, I've got a buddy fairly similar to you. He's in his mid-late 20s with a wife and 2 kids. He currently has a trade job, which is already hard on them (lots of time away, coincidentally currently in the ND oil fields). He's dreamed of special forces his whole life. I've talked him off the edge of enlisting several times because it WON'T be what he wants and it WILL destroy his marriage. Give up on the dream of being a badass operator. Very few people get to do that and they all picked a different path years ago.
Yes. If you were single with no kids I'd say go for it. But a wife and a kid, they are your responsibility now. And honestly if you wanted to choose the badass route you should've done that in your early 20's you're basically a 30 yr old now. The military doesn't want old people. You chose your path and set it in stone bud, it's not a bad path, but it is the comfortable path. And the comfortable path is generally the least fun unfortunately but a lot of military guys would kill for your life. Grass is always greener and all that
Self employment sounds like your best option. With your degree and experience, you would be a shoo-in for any of the branches. Now, the reality check; if you go enlisted, your starting monthly pay is $1516, plus housing and food allowances. Figure, maybe $2200 per month, all in. If you go OCS, your starting pay is $3108, plus allowances. Probably $3800 per month. How do those numbers stack up against your current income? You’ll also be separated from your family for months at a time.
Start your own company, sponsor a company shooting team.
Your wife will 100% cheat on you. It's not even a question if she will or not, it will absolutely happen.
>this is the best advice I've seen yet
