I am just curious, in films and so on when they saw off a gun, they almost always put tape on the stock. Is there a real reason for this or is this just a trope?
(I shoot shotguns, but never sawed one off, nor do I intend to barring the end of the world.)
I always figured it's because they sawed down the stock in a relative hurry and didn't actually sand it down or anything, so the back end would be a little rough.

I suppose it's because they cut the stock as well and the tape is for a clean grip without having to finish the wood or something.
Because they sawed through the bolt like retards and now tape is the only way it'll stay on.
Jordan Price
Little heavier recoil but only because you aren't used to holding it like you will.
Be careful what you shoot. Dad cut down a 20 gauge H&R before he died, he shot a telephone pole about 25 feet away, the wad came back and hit in in the thigh next to his dick. Had a softball sized bruise for about 2 weeks. This was with birdshot.
It doesn't spread like the old timers say it does.

Realistically it's probably to help the actors grip them. It's hot as fuck under the lights on film sets and I could see it being pretty tricky to keep a good grip on one of those movie sawed-offs with hot sweaty hands, especially since the actors are often directed to hold them one-handed at arm's length and flail them around and stuff.
Jeremiah White
It does a few things
1. Holds the stock together 2. Gives you much better grip 3. If rough cut, prevents splinters/savings biting you

I mean is aesthetics not a valid reason? I find the tape very appealing.

This. Dumbshits who committed crimes had no clue how the stock was attached. So they cut through the bolt and had to tape on the grip instead of running down to the hardware store and getting a short bolt. So it became a "standard look" of a sawed-off . since Hollywood is full of clueless liberals, it just became a meme without them realizing it.
Parker Roberts
I heard criminals put tape on handgun grips because of fingerprints; it would be useless on a shotgun since you are gonna be leaving fingerprints all over the pump. But hollywood nogunz libs probably don't think any further than "Tape means 0 fingeprints so he will tape the stock to show how much of hardened criminal he is"
Luke Adams
Tape is one of the best mediums for lifting prints.

I believe I know where you got this pic. Putting tape on a cut down shotgun serves a dual purpose. It keeps your hand from sliding off the wood grip if you have sweaty hand and your hands won't get cut if you won't bother rounding off the grip with a file and sand paper. The retarded "Rampart Range" video from the attackers at Columbine High School is a good example. The pocket of their hands got cut up.
Also, you might be aware of this but, sawed-off shotguns are not completely illegal under United States federal law. As long as the barrel is not cut down below 18 inches and the overall length of the gun is not under 26-27 inches. State and local laws may vary (especially California).

Memewave owner here, what said is right on the money. I have hockey tape on mine to reduce slippage
James Stewart
Thanks, man. I used to build shotguns as a hobby when I was younger, so all this info kind of stuck with me.
Jayden Martin
Well you remove the tape and any prints on the not sticky side are now in the garbage
Cameron Ramirez
OP here, as long as you meet federal regulations in my state you are kosher (18 inch barrel, and the 26 inches, though what you get in reality is 18.5 and 26.5 so your safe) but it has a really big ban on stuff smaller then that. Its the same punishment as manslaughter.
But I could make a 18.5 and 26.5 sawed off shotgun, but my shotguns are too nice for that type of stuff.
But thank you all for the nice replies.
Matthew Sanders
No worries, man.

Wich type of guns do hitmen prefer ? Do they really use sniper rifles ?

the VAST majority of hitmen aren't agent 47, they're poor favelamonkeys hired by local gangs they fucking run up, unload their barely functional pistol that hasn't been serviced since before admiral perry sailed to japan into the target, if it doesn't jam or explode they probably hit something important, then they leg it beyond that you have russian spies that enjoy poisoning the fuck out of people
