They sap up more resources than 2-3 guided missile Destroyers each, even the new Gerald Ford class has a compliment of around 4,000 personnel. In any new naval war, aircraft will become the most vulnerable assets against hostile ships, but will be very effective when attacking land or shore based targets. The Navys weak spot right now is not enough surface combatants, such as destroyers and cruisers which can engage land, air, and naval targets with equal leverage.

For whatever reason we give our minesweepers badass names like Devastator, Avenger, Gladiator, but everything gets named after people, States, cities. The state’s and cities I’m fine with, it’s been a tradition for decades, but naming the prides of our fleet after random presidents? I wish we’d kept famous battles for carriers instead of cruisers.

At least the Gator Navy has largely un-cucked names.

Next: Fast track a replacement for the Ticons based on the Zumwalt hull + Flight III Burke's radar but with the AGS replaced by 1.5 Ticons' worth of full-height VLS and with a Columbia Class powerplant at the center of the IEP system to up the top speed/endurance while all but eliminating the IR signature. Order 30-40 of them and use them like surface hunter-killers to defend carrier groups by staying away from the main fleet and relying on speed/stealth to add even more lethality to their air defense suite.

Keep the Burkes as-is and implement a mid-life refresh on all Flight IIs and some Is to bring them up to the III standard. Fast-track an OHP replacement but go as COTS as humanly possible to keep cost/procurement times down.

Keep the Gator Navy more or less unchanged, but add ski jumps to all LHDs to maximize the combat loads of the F-35s.

As for the air arm, order more F-35Cs to replace all of the original Hornets and maybe pad out the Rhinos/Growlers if you can. Scrap F/A-XX and replace it with a supersonic UCAV program aimed at building a swarm-capable multirole aircraft roughly the size of an A-4 or a Super Etendard. Order a new batch of C-2 Greyhounds too while you're at it, but maybe make them optionally manned.

Drop the corporate thinking and return the navy to a military branch with its own traditions and an emphasis on seamanship and war fighting again.
