i'm looking at "cloning" this rifle, can anyone tell me how accurate the parts I listed are? The thing I'm least sure of is the muzzle device since it looks like it might have ports at 12, 3, 6 and 9.
Also what's a good 20in barrel, and can someone post that image showing the difference between rifle and carbine buffers looking at the markings from the receiver?

OP pic is my first AR. It was a PSA premium 16" upper and a stripped lower I assembled myself.
Probably put around 500 rounds through it and eventually put a knights VFG and a vortex SPARC II on it. It was a simple basic bitch carbine, and my first real introduction to building my own ARs.
Prior to that, I had helped a friend build a gun Show special in his living room while we were in college. It was all SOTA arms junk parts, a carbon fiber handguard, and a barska red dot. It was trash, but we had a blast shooting it.

It was around 2006 and I found an Olympic arms middy on the used rack at Bass Pro or Cabelas, I forget. I paid about $1000 for it. It had a fixed stock, fixed carry handle, and non adjustable rear sight. Later I discovered the front sight need some special adjustment tool. Eventually I put a shitty adjustable stock from cheaperthandirt on it. I sold it about a year later, it never did get sighted in properly. I still hate that gun.

Bro, its still the same basic design and operation. Theres nothing "wrong" with the AR if it fits your needs, but it is by no means the cutting edge of small arms technology. It is the firearms equivalent of the small block Chevrolet: a good design that has continued to grow in popularity not because it is superior, but because of the culture and enthusiasm for it, and an aftermarket which has been profitable to keep it relatively interesting.

These are all minor improvements on the same components. Its still an ancient design, the main thing that improved are materials and manufacturing techniques to reduce cost on things like rails and stuff. Like I said, an LS is leaps and bounds better than an old 70s small block Chevy V8, but its still the same basic design, just lighter materials and better construction methods. The AR is not the bleeding edge of small arms, it's a profitable widget for consumers to buy accessories for.

Improvements, even those around the margins, accrue over the development period. Do you need me to explain this process further? Yes, when you look at the changes divorced from context each one is small, but you're not buying BCGs and just BCGs or barrels, etc. You're presumably using these components to build a rifle, no?

The point is that these minor changes don’t amount to much. The ar15 was from its conception and excellent rifle. This is especially true since the ar15s of today are still functionally almost identical to the M4A1.

And the HK 416 literally shit all over the AR with 75% less stoppages. 75 fucking percent. Now THATS a marked improvement, even under tight constraints that the military gave them and other companies gave them, which basically required them to keep the same dimensions and manual of arms as the m4. Face it, the AR is tired and not going any further, it's a dead end.
They mean shit unless they can withstand the abuse of being fielded to a real military in a working rifle. Individual marginal improvements are wasting time on a dead end instead of spending the same effort in building something better from scratch. We wouldn't have got the AR if someone didn't think to throw away the line of thought from the WWII/M1 Garand days.
