They need to fix the leclercs ridiculous mantlet armor.

Will the EU military ever have its own fifth gen fighter?

You're saying by 2035 no country will be building or employing tanks in their armed forces? hmm

Germany and France are doing a lot of projects together. Are they going full EU army

>how to blatantly waste taxpayer money: the project

yes, Airbus will strap a MTU turbine and a Thales radar on the tank and sell it as a 5th gen fighter

nah, we had worse

That accent is so thick you can serve it with bread.

>nah, we had worse
you mean, eurofighter?

NH90 was way worse

this, fuck this rusty lump of shit. I'll miss the Sea King

>mantlets, when will they learn

Only when burgers and chinks are starting to field 6th generation. Just like they fucked up with 4th gens.

So what do you guys think the future tank will end up like? I'm thinking along the lines of:

- 60 to 70 tones
- 130mm canon
- Autoloader / 3 man crew
- Modular armour sections for easy replacement
- Integrated active protection system
- Some sort of EW capability against ATGMs like jammers etc.
- All the sights and comms that are to be expected today but also some degree of data fusion and sharing / battlefield management. Maybe drone control for scouting

>Just like they fucked up with 4th gens.
Gonna need some arguments to back that up my dude. Eurofighter/Rafale process might have been expencive, but to say that they fucked up is not true. Both a capable fighters today.

Recon drone

>take 2 sticks
>cut them in halh
>tape 2 half sticks together
>look we made a new stick
That's a joke right?
There is absolutely no benefit in that Frankenstein.

You seem spot on. Perhaps rubber tracks will become a thing too on MBTs in the future now that 35+ ton IFVs has them (saves wear, weight, and massivly reduces vibrations, also to some extent improves top speed and fuel economy)

Leclerc was designed for a particular task (be the last curtain against soviet tanks), one of the main requirement was "don't be hit", so obviously armor is not its forte.

jesus that's a lot of armor

Sabots shatter, they don't bounce.

>thinking shot traps matter when everone uses APFSDS
>thinking a 10 cm area of a tank is a huge deal

The real world isnt WoT, you cant just snipe weakspots from 500 meters away like that.

>Leclerc has worst armor of them all

Judging by the caliber of Galix grenade launcher (80mm) the weak spot is more than 200mm. That`s a lot.

>Leclerc "armor"

As clearly indicated by the pic he posted.

Daily remidner that this tank is just a shitty mock-up.

That's NOT a lot of armor.

Which is sort of the problem. The Leclercs turret is literally shit.

Well, it's not a mock up, it's a fully functional tank that has been tested and fired many times as in the video. But it's more of a preliminary step to show they can work together (or begin the cooperation project by establishing a goal and a team).

a meter thick composite armor is not a lot for you? that shit should be over 3000 rha if they use half decent composite. the gun mantle would be the easiest shit to armor further if they didn't already.

they said in the video it's for exports only. no eu army plans to ever use it kek.

>3000 RHAe

It's almost like you haven't a fucking clue what you're looking at

not that part...

>"No no it's good on THIS part, just ignore the numerous fucking enormous weakpoints that wouldn't even stop a first gen APFSDS from the 70s."

The point of the discussion is that the Leclerc has by far the worst turret layout of armor of any western tank. Most tanks are weaker surrounding their gun, but they usually either have thick mantlets (Leopard) or cheeks that come right up to the gun (Abrams, Challenger, Merkava).

The Leclerc meanwhile has an enormous mantlet with effectively nothing behind it, and directly to its left (facing) another large weakpoint because unlike every other Western tank the French still haven't figured out how to make gunsights not require penetrating the main turret cheek armor point, and weakening the entire thing as a result.

It also has a massively exposed turret ring, far higher than other western tanks. It's only obscured by thin sheet steel, as someone has pointed out above. The thing is nearly 200mm vertically exposed, and has zero composite layering.

The majority of the turret, what is supposed to be the strongest point on the tank, is a vulnerability. As demonstrated here Bear in mind the Abrams in that was the very original M1A2, which lacked DU plating. It was essentially a mid-life M1A1 level. Difference is, Abrams can upgrade its composite and actually see a difference. Leclercs turret is fundamentally flawed on a base structural level, and no composite can make those segments resistant to modern rounds due to their very short (or non-existent) LOS.

>3000 RHA

There is no tank in the world with anything like that. You're talking out your ass, son.

i was talking about that image: that meter thick red (supposedly composite) looks pretty damn impressive.

It's nothing particularly special. Not as much LOS as other tanks. Certainly nothing like 3000 RHAe. Even the thickest tanks, and even for CE (which rates a lot higher than KE) you're looking at maybe just somewhere over 1000RHAe CE, and thats only on the absolute thickest areas.

Leclerc is definitely not as strong as them in those areas. Only one small segment on the right of the turret is any decent thickness.
