Considering jungle and urban combat have really close engagement distances (and AFAIK, 'Nam was either Jungle or Urban) the range detriment of a shotgun wouldn't be too much of a setback, especially if you still had some guys with rifles in your squad.

There's also stuff about "scoring" a second musket ball and putting it on top. So that it breaks apart and acts like a shotgun. It's possible this was done with rifles too, though I haven't run into that except in one source which was pretty poppy.

YES, in WW1 they were used for trench clearing and often mounted a bayonet. Trench guns, as they where called, were so effective that Kaiser Wilhelm demanded that they be banned claiming that any man caught with a shotgun would be killed out of hand.

They never really did. Shotguns have always played a specialist role in war. The smooth bore and wide barrel (comparatively) allowed shotguns to fire off many specialized munitions that can't be fired from narrow bore rifled barrels.Most notable is the Masterkey rifle attachment as a shotgun is very effective at removing locks from doors but sentries have been known to use shotguns with beanbag rounds so they can shoot first and apologize later.
