It's as good as guaranteed to be highly oval in cross-section. But if you've never seen a sword in real life I guess it's an easy mistake to make, since you can't tell the difference from a profile photo.

Proper edge alignment's good because of fundamental physics. You'll cut better, and the blade is at less risk of damage. It applies to every edged tool you try to cut with, including cavalry swords.
