At this point I am just going to build a A2 lightweight or a C7 with a pencil barrel and just live my life.

*closes thread*

I've been curious for a while now as to the origins of pic related, I know that they are basically standard GI mags, but what type of coating is applied? and what is the purpose?

Attached: mag identification.png (1840x672, 2.46M)

well if you look down in the valleys, thats the outer coating which is grey.

Old school military used to put a coating on the raw aluminum so prevent corrosion and then another coat on top of that.

Have a look at hexavalent chromium coating and then put the gray coat on top of that. Think electrolysis between sea water, aluminum and other metals.

Used to coat Alum parts for the DoD all the time in that gold shit

So they are basically older GI mags with the grey coating worn away? I've always found them somewhat attractive even if they are a bit gaudy.

basically correct

some ar build done by chad from shillraqveteran8888, its a grey gi mag painted yellow.

Its obviously not a painted mag, the grooves would be the same color, and nobody would really go to the trouble of painting a GI mag that metallic mustard color and bother to sand out the grooves.

Thinking about getting a S&W sport 2 as my first AR. Are they good guns? I heard that .22 isn’t good for home defense.

Really digging the BCM KAG so far. Can't wait to get the MBUS pros sighted in too. Fucking love that it has a finer front sight post. At 50 yards I like to shoot little 5x5 inch targets, the post on the polymer mbus almost entirely covers the targets at that range.

Attached: 20181013_003524.jpg (1960x4032, 2.75M)

They're great beginner ARs, I love mine. Only real issue is the furniture that comes on it from the factory is shit, but serviceable, and the thicc barrel profile makes it a bit heavier.

Attached: 20181013_002106.jpg (4032x1960, 2.28M)

Kinda neat vfg. I wish Tango down made a direct mlok mount. Seems like It would be a no brainer

Not a lot of triangle fans in this thread, huh?

Attached: AR-15-Front-Sight-Base.jpg (1024x866, 208K)

Around $1200
Way off the mark, the rail is like $600 on its own.
You know what's up.

>Old school military used to put a coating on the raw aluminum so prevent corrosion and then another coat on top of that.

This amuses me, aluminum naturally oxidizes a thin layer of aluminum (III) oxide which is a corrosion inhibitor on its own.

That aside, worn down USGI mags are the best looking mags.

I like triangle handguards way more than I like those shitty DPMS extra-ribs-for-even-more-pleasure handguards.

>handguards
I thought the picture was pretty obviously a out that front sight post user

USGI mags look like shit brand new out of the wrapper and are 9/10 scratched to hell already.

Oh derp. There was a lot of chatter about triangle handguards up above, my b.

I do like FSBs even though all my uppers so far are free floats. If I build another upper it will be a Block 1.5, 14.5" SOCOM profile p&w with the KAC RIS. I have light weight builds aplenty so it would be fun to make a heavyboi.

>USGI mags look like shit brand new out of the wrapper
You take that back!

Attached: 1493449964725.jpg (540x350, 41K)

A lot of builds in this thread have a lot of weight as close to the end of the barrel as possible? What's the reason behind this? I thought that you'd want to keep as much weight off the front end as possible to make it easier to maneuver?

Generally your off hand is going to be towards the end of the handguard, makes it easier to hit switches on stuff.

You want a flashlight towards the end of the handguard so there isnt a giant shadow created by the handguard itself, the barrel will di enough of that already.

Putting lasers back where your hand will obscure the beam is just silly.

Flashlights are mounted as far forward as possible to reduce barrel shadow, and they generally weigh very little these days so the balance doesn't suffer too much. Lasers are also mounted up front so your support hand doesn't obstruct the beam, and if the laser also has an IR illuminator, the barrel shadow problem is also minimized. They can go back more if your grip doesn't get in the way and you don't have an illuminator to worry about. Front sights go as far forward as possible in most cases to maximize sight radius, but might get mounted back farther to make room for other equipment if it's just a backup sight.

It's all a compromise.

A blank canvas.

Doitfagit

Attached: 74pom3q307o01.jpg (3558x2628, 1.71M)

Oh shit. How do you like it? Should I go with the CQB length upper or try for a full length one like you’ve got?

Current shooting philosophy involves having the off hand as far forward as possible, as a result you want all your switches and things where you can hit them without moving your hand.

Also a good heavy stock can counter balance pretty easily.

Attached: LongGun.jpg (1885x1060, 317K)

Gonna do a minimalist/lightweight build. What are the best iron sights one can get for under $250? I see MBUS Pro mentioned here pretty often.

Bonus for wide rear aperature. Plan on short ranges

250 may be enough for KAC if there are still real USMC-marked rear 600m ones left on ebay.

Any reason those are so popular.

Alternatively, are there any rear sights with the flippable wide/narrow peeps like old A2's?

KAC is just that good. The rears can be had for $50 if they’re usmc marked. The fronts are much more expensive I’d suggest MBUS pro front. Idk about foldable changeable peeps though

Attached: D46B7046-6F8E-4A8E-8991-3E9EC281E07C.jpg (2590x1535, 1.82M)

Troy sights have the flippable apertures, but then you're buying from Troy which might run against your morals.

KAC 200-600m sights are popular because they're very low profile, can be adjusted for elevation and windage without tools, and they've been issued to cool guys for ages so they have a decent track record. A bunch of surplus USMC marked sights hit the market a few years ago so they can be had for cheap. The KAC 200-600m rear sight's peep is a little small for close up work, but the (non elevation adjustable) 300m backup sight has a removable aperture insert to open things up a bit.

I've heard very rare complaints that they lose their ability to stay upright after a lot of use, and sometimes you might get a lemon or a knockoff and the 200-600m diopter drum comes apart, but that's probably more of a caveat emptor for buying used off Ebay.

Cool. Well, perhaps what I need is less of something like a KAC and more of a ghost ring. 200m is about as far as I plan to shoot, most stuff being even within 100m.

Would a ghost ring and a low profile laser be a dumb setup for a lightweight? I'm no worried about night shooting with just irons.

>get a red dot
I know but I kind of want to avoid an optic for purely autistic reasons.

LMT L8A and DD fixed front if no FSP

They come in different flavors but I like this one.

There's a ton of fuddlore about it and was wondering what you goys thought about it for a fun plinker / camping / jenkem-huffing african rifle.

The only reason to have an AR in Africa is to waste skinnies.

Anyone here put a good amount of rounds through a suppressed shorty 300 blk setup? Am looking hard at it, want to know pros/cons from someone who has dealt with it a bit.

Plenty of Africans here in America.

If you want a larger caliber AR-15 there are cheaper ways to do it. I'm personally looking forward to when they finally get around to releasing those 9x39 AR barrels. Seems like a good option for a handly little AR pistol that can fuck up hogs and other big game.

Simple as, get a 8" barrel 300 blk, and a 7" guard.

Nice. I missed out on seeing that at SHOT, thanks. I'm looking forward to that.

Wolf is importing 287grn Subs at about $1 a round. But there are talks about the release of reloading components as well as a ramping up of domestic production of the ammo. That and the prices of ammo and volume of the imports should improve once they have the AR barrels for sale and people will actually be wanting to buy the stuff.

I placed an order last night for a ba premium 9" and slg 8.3. Omega still in jail but it should be great.

I have around 1,300 for a AR. Max I will go is 1,400, but I would rather stay around 1,300 for a AR this is with a scope at least. what should I get?

1200+

That MD is worth like 200+
