it's mostly preference, but compounds are generally better for hunting because you can keep it drawn without having to hold back the full pull weight.

so you're comparing apples to oranges? you don't have to have a compound set up that heavy, and even then I've never jumped a cam using finger release. this is just a bunch of bullshit apologetics that recurve fags tell themselves to feel better about using an outdated design.

It’s a tool that depends on your skill. A compound can have a heavier draw weight, but also has a draw break that will let you hold a shot with minimum effort. It’s also more complicated mechanically.
You want to get the fundamentals down first you should get a recurve. A compound can hide bad technique

Most compound bows built within the last 10 years can achieve 280fps IBO with about a 50lb draw. Even cheap starter bows like the Diamond Infinite Edge.

And yes, people roll the strings off their cams all the fucking time. Sometimes the limbs shatter, sometimes they don't, but the string is ALWAYS toast. It's the #1 repair I do for bows, I have to re-string a bow someone rolled off the cams at least 4x a week. And most of them are managing it WITH releases. Never underestimate the ability for stupid people to break shit.

Recurve for fun compound for sport

Friend gave me a Siege 55lb from Amazon, I added a cheap whisker biscuit. I had trouble getting a good enough target and backstop and ended up having to just buy a deer... It's way too powerful to afford to a miss while getting it dialed in, it will go clean through a peat moss bale and halfway through a fence.

Decent points in this thread. I've shot both, I've stuck with tradbow since i was young though.

Benefits:

substantially less mechanical failures. no sights falling off, no releases malfunctioning, less moving parts
Portability/disassembly. The 3 piece takedown from bear fits in your backpack, shorter than your arrows, can be put together in less than a minute.
DIY, make your own bowstrings, arrows are easier to fletch. don't have to take it to a guy to put a string on it or tune it.
in my opinion tradbows are so much funner to shoot, you can shoot them faster, its easier to stump shoot/ shoot at squirrels/birds. i've just had a lot better experience fucking around with tradbows than I have Compounds.

Cons:

good ones are pretty expensive
takes a lot of work to git gud
can't just go pick a good one up at wal-mart/cabellas,
you'll never be able to shoot as far/fast(as in fps) as a compound shooter.
you'll make mistakes learning how to do it if you don't have a old timer around to teach you.

I'm Bias obviously, but I think that tradbows are way more fun. once you try one and get the hang of it you'll never want to waste your time with a compound.

You can silence a bow. For example on a recurve, put soft stuff (most use fur) on the parts where the string hits the limbs.

They're pretty damn quiet regardless.
