That's an ATF bluff. A pistol is defined as originally designed to be held with one hand. Later putting a second grip on it would not change how it was originally designed. There was a case a couple decades ago wher a judge told the ATF off for that, too, but since the charge was then dropped, there still isn't any legal precedent, so the ATF has continued to bluff people about it.
Incidentally, it also means most AR and AK pistols actually are AOWs.
He never stopped illegally possessing it, so there's no way a statute of limitations could possibly come into play on that charge.

The man is a model citizen and decorated patriot, yet the same government that issued him an M14 and awarded him a medal for using it is now imprisoning him for seven years for merely possessing the exact same thing without their permission.
