Both are fine and as for ammo availability again both are fine because hopefully you stockpiled a few thousand rounds of Russian steel case for whatever rifle(s) you have before the collapse. On a side note it is easier to reload brass case for AR because it is more widely available but at some point you will still run out of reloading supplies and be back at the same level as the guy with an AK and 10k rounds stockpiled.

I don't think it will be because of your AK but I can imagine both firearm experienced and inexperienced older people being very intimidated by you being a young lean man with a rifle outside of a range, especially during some type of disaster. We belong to the most violent demographic, young people, and being fit we look very capable and efficient at doing it.
You can be the nicest guy in your neighborhood but strangers don't know that so watch your body language, wave from a distance, look for a friendly response, if none then leave with your hands up and keep your distance from then on, don't approach unless invited, and make sure your group stays back, arms low, as insurance you'll light there house up if they try something.
The words you use are important. Show genuine concern. Let them know your intent even if it's just to announce your presence in the area. People trust an open person rather than some unknown group with guns just walking around their area. If they turn up okay, let them know its safer if they explain to their neighbors about you or have them, while being easily identifiable, with you to meet them.

The AK. No question. Way lower maintenance, plenty accurate for any reasonable engagements that you would experience in SHTF, hits harder. The whole "scavenging ammo" thing is so dumb. If you buy like 500 rounds of 762 you realistically won't ever run out for years, you would only be shooting in emergencies or for hunting you wouldn't be target shooting at the range blowing ammo away.

The Romanians actually do a very good job building the WASRs. Problem is they are imported as parts kits and amateur gunsmiths at Century Arms suck dick at reassembling them. If you get one that's been properly QC'd it will last forever. If you can afford it though, buy Russian.

Definitely the kalash. It has and will continue to outlive entire generations. That's a rifle you can hand to your son, explain the two buttons, the three parts, and he's an expert on using it. The AR j has shit ton of small parts that need to be removed just to clean it. It also has to be cleaned and won't run dry. It will actually cease to fire if it doesn't have adequate lube, whereas an AK can run bone dry from it's birth to its expiration (not recommended tho), which will likely be way further off than the ARs death because less small parts to break.

If you run an AR as a SHTF weapon, when oil runs out you're fucked. There's a decent supply of vegetable and motor oils in the country but people are obviously going to consume the veggie oil pretty quick and probably find other uses for motor oil such as burning for warmth or to make light. Then you're gonna be sitting there trying to figure out how to get your gun to work, when it should just work. You can carry your own bottle of motor oil, that might be enough for your lifetime, but liquids are heavy. I wouldn't want to bother.

Obviously I'm being an autist and you'll probably die getting assraped by black nationalist marauders way before oil becomes a commodity. There's also other guns to consider rather than just AKs and ARs, just saying. Bolt actions rarely fuck up if reliability is a major concern to you.

In US reality AR family is better. Better availability of parts, know how, ammo, etc...furthermore decades of "trial and error" have perfected the M/AR family to the point where it's reliability is comparable to the AK family.

Also, currently the price is comparable...in fact i would say that the AR family has a better price-to-quality ratio now since the era of cheap East Euro guns is over.

AKs can be cleaned by sticking a water hose into one end or dunking them in a pool.

I'm not saying Saigia et al are bad manufacturers, I'm saying AKs are inferior weapons no matter how well they're made.

I significantly disagree. They have a different manual of arms, sure. But blanket inferior is just inaccurate. They work very well as a low maintenance hard use rifle with minimal cleaning, and with adequate training you can do almost anything on them as fast as you can on an AR.

I do think the AR has significant ergonomic improvements, but most of the real advantages an AR has are from the simple fact that it's had more aggressive technological development of parts, and has benefited much more from civilian users giving feedback to parts manufacturers. If the AK had the same level of constant R&D going on, I think it would be pretty much dead on with modern ARs.

The AR with its life as the M16 and M4 may have had some growing pains but has improved so much more than the AK with modern ammo and 1x7 twist barrels. Honestly I really only like shooting my 74 now. 7.62x39 just doesn’t seem to perform how I want.

Piston ARs are undoubtedly the worst ARs for SHTF because if an important part in the gas system breaks then you are beyond fucked and absolutely cannot get a replacement. AKs are at least common enough to the point where the parts are acquirable but piston ARs are so niche and varied that it's just a lose-lose once you don't have the internet to hand deliver you shit.

No arguing that DI ARs are the best in such a scenario.

But for the price and what you get with a WASR, an equivalent AR would cost far more. I have multiple piston kits now and I cant go back. I shoot an old ford taurus in my backyard nearly every day. I estimate to be around 20000 rounds out of a Rock River I got in 2007. Had maybe 3 failures that weren’t old pmag feed lips being fucked or wolf ammo somebody brought over. Maybe Ive just had bad experiences with DI guns, idk.

you need to get better mounts and better optics on both of those stat,
look into primary arms 1x prism for the AR15 and a vortex venom for the AK,
look into getting an ultimak gas block mount for that vortex venom.

If you seriously think an AR has to be piston driven to compete with a WASR then I have no idea what to say. I've had absolutely no issues with DI guns though I personally prefer shooting AKs simply because they're more fun. Still, the last thing I'd ever be worried about with an AR is a situation where a piston would have saved me.
