How well would a .22 work when SHTF?
It's all I have.
How well would a .22 work when SHTF?
It's all I have.
It's a small round with a short range (in average hands). It will perform like a small round with a short range.
Won't get you terribly far, but it's better than nothing.
It's good for food gathering, just don't get in firefights with it.
you'll never be able to hunter anything larger than a raccoon with it, for coercion it'd work, and it's lethal a lot further out than you can reliably hit. better than nothing. nice that carrying gobs of ammo is light.
>not playing with a handicap
At one point or another, .22LR has been used to kill every land animal in North America.
It’s good. Pound for pound it’s gunna give you a lot of shots, is cheap to practice with, and easy to hoard ammo for.
And it’s a great to to procure something better with.
Realistically you won't want to use it past 200 yards, but inside that range you've got the potential for very fast follow up shots, and with an optic it is easy to watch the bullet connect
.22LR is ideal for harvesting small game and is of course light weight. Biggest perk is cost, if you can afford to shoot 5000 rounds through your 10/22 you'll learn more than putting 500 through your AR

Idk and no one knows because America has never had a nation-wide SHTF condition since the Civil War
People have been poaching deer for 100 years with .22.
Ethics don't matter when hunting for food, you shouldn't give a shit about undue suffering of the animal.
The benefit of the take down 10/22 is the ammo. Buy several bricks and you're ok.
>you shouldn't give a shit about undue suffering of the animal.
Can't you just double-tap?
>Not able to hunt bigger than raccoon
A Stevens Pump Action 22lr was used to kill the world record grizzly bear in the early 50’s
If you get the chance, sure, not many guns that are easier to follow up with than the 10/22, but if you goof the first shot while the animal is still you're likely to goof the 2nd while he runs... and with small game it is easy to waste meat
and Israelis use 22s to humanely euthanize protesters
It can work
If full auto was easily legally accessible .22LR would be the perfect caliber for 99% of applications
Use it to kill someone with bigger guns. Problem solved.
Want some real fun look into .224 valkyrie. Some are claiming you can get to 1300 yards using AR-15 lower and 6.8 mags.
.22 lr is the ideal SHTF rifle. Anyone who thinks you can't kill a man or large game with a .22 lr doesn't know shit about anything. Everything from grizzly bears to small game can and has been killed by a .22 lr. The shooter has to know what they're doing but it is completely possible. .22 lr is perfect in SHTF because you can put thousands of rounds in your pocket and be prepared to hunt for years. No other rifle can say the same. Some moron trying to lug a 30 pound .50 cal up a mountain and only carrying 20 rounds because he can't carry anymore is going to be fucked in the long run. He's unlikely to find any elephants to shoot in North America. He's just a dummy who fell for the stopping power meme. .22 lr is the single most underestimated round in the world.
The thing about .22LR is that it is easy to hate. It is less powerful and less reliable than centfire ammunition. Really, a lot of semi auto firearms can be less reliable than their ammunition (especially historically) but that doesn't really fly today. You can load a 10/22 with very reliable ammunition but the savings over centerfire decrease and the shelf life of the ammo and power factor can become considerations
I love my 10/22s, shoot them more than anything. Not what I'd grab if I saw a guy with a gun coming to my door but if I was in the woods I'd feel capable to 200 yards. Of course that's not suitable for everyone but for most people it works great. I've shot rabbits and cotton tails with handguns, but for harvesting (small) game it seems best to invest the least, and destroy the least meat
I've got a few air guns I'd trust to take a rabbit but I wouldn't trust them to kill a human like a 22 could
