Obvious one, but you'd be surprised. A wooden target in the middle of a field seems fine until the slightly dead grass and leaf litter around it starts burning. Once the ball gets rolling fire can get out of hand fast. Somewhere dirt or concrete is best for testing.

Its unnecessarily dangerous to have the top open and stuff a rag down it like a wick. Seal the bottle back up after filling and tie the rag around the neck of the bottle. Wet the rag with an accelerant immediately before use.

There's a hell of a lot of different types of fillings you can use depending on the thickness you want or special effects that are needed. I've heard of everything from styrofoam to hard soap to vaseline being used as a thickener, feel free to experiment but don't use anything chemically reactive or breathe in the fumes. I've even heard of a couple of auto igniting recipes, usually involving akali metals or sulfuric acid-potassium reactions. For starters a good old 70-30 mix of gas and motor oil works pretty well in balancing spread and burn time while being very easy and cheap to make IME.

Im going to hijack this thread to not kill any other threads open right now. Im making a mini-documentary about easily made explosives and their potential/current use as weapons of terror. Im already versed on the necessary legal protections needed for making this but what kind of extras can you add to a molotov to make it more dangerous? Motor oil/styrofoam napalm is one thing I've heard. Also I could use anything on pipe bombs and pressure cookers. Im working with pyrodex but want to vary the stuff used. Emphasis on accessible and easy as anything requiring a lab ruins the point.

Yeah OP smells like ATF. The real trick to making molotovs is to mox motor oil, gasoline and styrofoam. Soak the wick in lighter fluid before use and everything else is just overkill. I would never ever plan to do that though :^)

I don't have any experience with Molotov cocktails but I know a thing or two about napalm. Mixing gasoline, motor oil, and Styrofoam makes a mixture that's difficult to ignite until it gets hot. Napalm-B recipe from Dow is 1 part gasoline, 1 part benzene, 2parts polystyrene. Benzene can be replaced with toluene that can be acquired from hardware stores as paint thinner. Powdered aluminum can be added to make it burn hotter. Once it ignites it's very difficult to put out. If you are going to play with this, use it in small batches and get a purple potassium fire extinguisher.
